Fear is the mind-killer

The Sounders seem to be playing scared so far this season. It’s time they face their fears and become the team they’re meant to be.

Too on the nose? Is “on the nose” too much, too? Whatever you get the point.

The early season struggles of the Seattle Sounders have no single cause – the lack of genuine chance creation is a reoccurring motif, but is hardly the only reason for a meager two points through three full matches. With a lack of clear, definitive causes, I’ve found myself contemplating larger themes from the three games and change that we’ve seen so far.

In that contemplation, I’ve repeatedly come back to the idea that the team’s struggles seem to come from a place of fear. Now, I’m the kind of person who thinks about Dune a lot, and even more so recently as Dune 2 has taken a prominent place in The Discourse since it’s release, and so I’ve inevitably found my thoughts wandering to the Litany Against Fear:

I must not fear.

Fear is the mind-killer.

Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.

I will face my fear.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path.

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.

Only I will remain.
