UNITED 1, SOUNDERS 1: What started well turned disastrous in the first half when Stefan Frei gave up a penalty and was red-carded in 28th minute. After a review, Christian Benteke converted to tie the score in the 32nd minute.

UNITED 0, SOUNDERS 1: Léo Chú grabbed his first goal of the season, heading in a Jordan Morris cross to complete an attack that featured several blocked shots.

LINEUPS: Mired in their worst-ever start and already having a lineup locked in a few days later, the Seattle Sounders are going with a heavily rotated lineup with just four players starting in the same positions they were in last Saturday. Among the new names in the lineup are Danny Musovski and Jon Bell, both of whom will get their first-ever Sounders starts. Also entering the lineup are Léo Chú, Josh Atencio and Cody Baker. Jordan Morris moves from left winger to right winger, while Cristian Roldan moves from right winger to right back.

The Seattle Sounders begin what could turn out to be a pivotal two-game road trip today, facing D.C. United for the first time since 2019. For all the Sounders’ struggles, United are off to an only marginally better start to the season. They are 2-3-4 with a -2 goal-difference, but they have been among the most active defensive teams in the league and have a genuine Golden Boot contender in Christian Benteke (six goals).

The Sounders should be in full desperation mode, though. They are off to their worst-ever start through eight games (1-4-3) and have two even tougher opponents waiting in the wings (the Philadelphia Union on Tuesday and the LA Galaxy at home next week). They will also be short-handed, once again, with Jackson Ragen, Alex Roldan and, potentially, Nathan all missing the game for various reasons.

Notes

  • The Sounders are 5-2-1 across all-competitions at D.C. United, which includes the 2009 U.S. Open Cup final. The Sounders have only played at Audi Field once, in 2019, and lost that game 2-0.
  • This will be just the third time the Sounders have played in the Eastern time zone since 2020, and one of those trips was the Union match earlier this year that was postponed.
  • Jackson Ragen and Alex Roldan are suspended for this match after being red-carded against the Whitecaps.
