Sounders vs. Crew: Gamethread
FREI CONCUSSED: The game ended shortly after Stefan Frei took a knee to the head and appeared to be knocked out, ultimately leaving the field in an ambulance.
SOUNDERS 1, CREW 1: Paul Rothrock gets his third goal of the season after a slick move and pass by Kalani Kossa-Rienzi. The sequence started with Obed Vargas winning a tackle in Crew's end and featured 15 connected passes.
Sequence starts with Obed Vargas making a nice tackle to win it back after a poor turnover. But this is really all about the play by Kalani Kossa-Rienzi.

SOUNDERS 0, CREW 1: Diego Rossi sneaks in at the back post after the Crew break the Sounders' pressure.
LINEUPS: The Sounders made just one change from last week’s win over Austin FC, swapping in Nouhou for the suspended Reed Baker-Whiting.
The Seattle Sounders are back on Sunday Night Soccer, this time hosting the Columbus Crew. The Sounders will be looking to build on the momentum they feel they picked up during the Club World Cup and are coming off a win over Austin FC.
The Crew will pose a very different kind of challenge. Unlike Austin, the Crew want the ball over all else. They lead the league in a host of passing categories and will likely try to play through the Sounders’ press.
The Crew are also in the midst of a three-game winning streak, albeit with all three of those matches at home. They’ve not been quite as good on the road, where they are 3-2-3 and haven’t won since April.
Notes
- The Sounders revealed that João Paulo has sustained a torn ACL and is likely out for the year. It’s the second ACL injury the Sounders have suffered this year.
- In a bit of a rarity, the Sounders will face an Eastern Conference opponent two years in a row. Last year, the Sounders beat the Crew 4-0 in Columbus.
- If Jesús Ferreira scores another goal this season, he’ll tie Landon Donovan for the most MLS goals before turning 25. He currently has 55 career MLS goals.
- With his next save, Stefan Frei will reach 1,000 career saves with the Sounders. He will become just the second player in MLS history to reach that milestone with one team.
- The grass from the Club World Cup has been removed.
