I'm not going to tell you that the Seattle Sounders will put up 8 against Santos Laguna.
I am going to tell you that Brian Schmetzer's seventh competitive win against Liga MX teams came with a 7-0 stomping. Getting the win wasn't out of character. Even prior to that stunning match Schmetz won more than he lost against teams from Mexico.
Now his record is 7-5-3, +11 and his squads won a CCL title while also making a Leagues Cup Final.
If he had that record in MLS he'd finish a season with 55 points. But in MLS the Seattle Sounders would face bad teams. Generally the Liga MX opponents have been in the CCL/CCC. That means they're winners, giants, big massive budgets.
1.60 ppm against greatness is wild.
In many ways the Sounders record against Liga MX sides echoes their performance in the playoffs. They are good to great in these tournaments. There's an on switch that they hit when matches matter most. In the MLS Playoffs he's even better, with a 2.0 ppm – winning 18 games over 9 appearances so far.
7-nil isn't a wakeup call for Tijuana and Santos Laguna.
7-nil is a warning bell for MLS.
In the last year Cruz Azul advanced in competitions against MLS, facing Seattle, Vancouver, Philly and Orlando.
Forget the transitive property – Brian Schmetzer's annual transformation project is over. The Seattle Sounders are ready for any tournament standing in their way.
