Stefan Frei has officially re-signed with the Seattle Sounders, who announced the new deal on Monday. The new contract will be through June 2027, keeping him with the Sounders for the so-called “sprint” season that will serve as a transition to the calendar switch in 2027-28.
“I’m ecstatic to have Stef back with us,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said in a team release. “He’s had a massive impact on this team for a long time, and he remains a steadying force in our locker room. Stef has already put together a hugely successful career with this club and having him continue that journey here means a lot to all of us. His experience, his presence and the way he carries himself set the tone for our group every day. We’re grateful to have him back.”
Frei, 39, will likely transition into a backup, but has already established himself one of the best goalkeepers in MLS history. Although he’s never won Goalkeeper of the Year, he ranks in the top 2 or 3 in virtually every major statistical category. Perhaps more importantly, he has also won six major trophies since joining the Sounders ahead of the 2014 season and is the only player in league history to have won MLS Cup, Concacaf Champions Cup, the U.S. Open Cup, the Canadian Championship and the Supporters’ Shield.
Last year, Frei started 26 league games and 35 across all competitions despite suffering a concussion that forced him to miss nearly six weeks. In league play, he has a 1.19 goals-against average, eight shutouts and went 11-7-8.
“I’m grateful to re-sign with the Sounders,” Frei said. “This club, this city and the fans mean so much to me. My family and I are incredibly excited to stay in Seattle and continue this incredible journey together. The work continues. Go Sounders!”
