MLS has unveiled the details of the 2027 “sprint” season that will serve as a bridge to the calendar change that begins with the 2027-28 campaign.
Among the key details:
- Each team plays 14 games from February-April, with all of them being intra-conference
- Top 8 teams from each conference advance to single-elimination playoffs with MLS Cup final being held in May
- Five teams will qualify for 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup
- Top 18 qualify for 2028 Leagues Cup
This will set up the new calendar, which is scheduled to being in July 2027 when MLS will embark on a summer-to-spring schedule with MLS Cup in May 2028. The league will take a midwinter break from mid-December through early February, with no league matches in January.
