The results are in and the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals are set following the final legs of all the Round of 16 series in the continental tournament.
With the dust settled, four MLS clubs have emerged with their title dreams intact, while five others have been sent packing. We'll continue our CCC coverage with some quick thoughts on the final results after the latest round of action.
Toluca FC 6, San Diego 3
San Diego were actually in solid position to eliminate the back-to-back Liga MX title-winners after somehow managing to pull out a 3-2 result in Leg 1 despite getting two red cards. It would have been one of the most impressive CCC results in MLS history, especially when considering this was San Diego's tournament debut. Instead, Toluca blasted them 4-0 in the second leg in Mexico, turning it into relatively smooth sailing. They're back to looking like the odds-on favorite to win the whole thing.
San Diego still look like one of the best teams in MLS, so they can feel good about their chances of contending for other trophies this season. Still, it feels like they missed an opportunity after putting themselves in a genuinely good position for an all-time result.
LA Galaxy 6, Mt. Pleasant 0
The Galaxy have had the easiest path so far. We can make fun of them for that, but it's not like they drew up the bracket, so I won't knock them for taking care of business and beating Sporting San Miguelito and Mt. Pleasant.
An easy path can only carry you for so long in CCC, though. The Galaxy now have one of the hardest matchups of anybody in the quarters with Toluca up next. I have pretty much no faith they'll be able to pull it off, but we should all be rooting for them to do so. If they can somehow get it done, it would eliminate one of the biggest threats to all the remaining MLS clubs.
Nashville SC 1, Inter Miami 1
This one takes the prize for the most comedic result thus far. After spending $30-plus million over the offseason, specifically to make a run in this tournament, Inter Miami crashed out immediately, and not even at the hands of a Liga MX opponent. It was Nashville SC that did them in, thanks to a Cristian Espinoza equalizer in Leg 2 that sent the Coyotes through on away goals.
Nashville should be credited for a mammoth defensive effort to hold Messi and Co. to just one goal over 180 minutes. Still, you have to wonder about where things stand with this Miami side after this. This year's CCC was their holy grail, and their run didn't even make it to April. Tough scenes.
Club América 2, Philadelphia Union 1
This one was interesting in terms of how close it was relative to how close it should have been. Philadelphia legitimately look like the worst team in MLS right now, losing all five of their league games to start the season. You'd think that'd make for light work for Club América, but the Union gave them a run for their money, and ultimately only lost by one goal on aggregate. It probably doesn't mean much, but as it stands right now, Tolua and Tigres both look more likely to make a run to the final than Club America. They take on Nashville SC next, which should be a fun series.
Tigres 5, FC Cincinnati 4
The biggest choke job of the Round of 16 goes to FC Cincinnati, who didn't even come close to holding the 3-0 lead they had on Tigres after Leg 1. The second leg was one of the most one-sided matches you'll ever see, and even then, a set-piece goal from Kevin Denkey actually still had Cincy in position to advance on road goals. All they had to do was hold out for the last 30 seconds of the match, which would have given Seattle a much more favorable matchup for the quarters. That was obviously way too much to ask, as Tigres predictably slammed home a series-winner just before the final whistle. In the end, Cincinnati was probably never ready for the smoke.
LAFC 3, Alajuelense 2
LAFC was ready for the smoke, eliminating Alajuelense thanks to a dramatic winner from David Martinez at the death in Leg 2. You might think a team with Son Heung-min and Denis Bouanga should have an easier time against a side that doesn't have near the resources or spending power that they do. That's just not always how it works in Concacaf, though. These matches are about survival, especially on the road, so I'll give the Black & Gold their due for accomplishing that task. They'll need to play closer to their top level in the quarters, where they've got defending title-winners Cruz Azul up next.
Seattle Sounders 5, Vancouver Whitecaps 1
This series was closer than the final aggregate scoreline might suggest. Vancouver's early goal at ONE Spokane Stadium made the Sounders have to pass their own survival test to prevent another concession that could have made it really interesting. Then, Danny Musovski and Paul Rothrock struck late to make sure there was no funny business.
All things considered, it's a successful start to the tournament, eliminating one of the better sides in MLS pretty comfortably, while also managing to average 2 points per game in league play. We'll learn a lot about this team in this quarterfinal matchup with Tigres, who will be flying high after what they just did to FC Cincinnati.
