Nikola Petković is officially out for the season, following a successful right knee ACL reconstruction surgery. The Seattle Sounders announced that Petković’s surgery, performed at Providence Swedish in Seattle by Dr. David Balfie on Thursday, April 9, had been successful, and that the team had placed him on the Season-Ending Injury List.

Petković will be ineligible to play for the rest of 2026, but his immediate and intermediate future remain somewhat unclear. He joined the Sounders on loan ahead of the 2026 season from Charlotte FC. Petković initially moved to Charlotte’s MLS Next Pro affiliate Crown Legacy FC from Serbian side FK Čukarički for a fee of around $4.5 million in February 2023. He went on to make 24 appearances in all competitions for Charlotte’s first team from 2024 to 2025. After struggling to find his footing in Charlotte, Petković appeared to have found a more comfortable environment with the Sounders. It remains to be seen whether he’ll do his rehabilitation in Seattle or if he’ll return to Charlotte for the rest of this season.

Sounders Head Coach Brian Schmetzer has already made references to the Sounders bringing the midfielder back, potentially either by extending his loan or signing him on a permanent basis. That decision and any negotiations involved will be left up to General Manager and Chief Soccer Officer Craig Waibel. When Petković’s move to Seattle was announced, reporting placed a transfer fee at the end of his loan between $500k and $1 million. Given this injury, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising to see that fee negotiated down closer to the lower end of that range.

By placing Petković on the SEI list the Sounders open up both the U-22 spot and the International spot that he occupied, as well as a prorated portion of his $200k salary cap hit. That all could prove valuable this summer when the Sounders look to strengthen their roster during the transfer window with an impressive collection of resources at their disposal.
