The Tacoma Defiance continued a strong run of form by earning the 1-0 victory over Real Monarchs on Sunda. This was an important victory as the Monarchs occupy the last playoff spot in the conference. After this result, Defiance are now only one point out of that 8th spot and have a realistic shot at climbing even higher in the table.

The first half was a fairly even contest without activity in either 18, until about the last 10 minutes. This is when the game opened up and 5 of the 6 total shots between each team were taken. The best chance fell to the Defiance in the 40th minute, when Rafael Jauregui was able to play a ball centrally from the near touchline to Edson Carli. From a few yards outside the opposing penalty box, he played a through ball to Mark Bronnik. His cross found an underlapping Codey Phoenix who put a shot to the far post with his weaker right foot. Charlie Gaffney had made a run and was waiting but his redirection went off the post. The rest of the half ended with a couple long distance shots for either team that ultimately weren’t very dangerous.

The second half was a much more dynamic game with goal line action after both teams combined for 20 shots. It was the Defiance who came out of the half and grabbed the momentum as they were able to get their goal after only 10 minutes. Mark O’Neill sent a long ball over the top that Bronnik was able to beat the defender to. After showing strength to ride a shoulder challenge, Bronnik dinked the ball around the keeper to dribble into the corner of the net.

The Defiance kept up the dangerous play through the first part of the second half, but eventually the Monarchs were able to grab momentum to finish the game. Through solid defensive effort throughout the team and some great saves by Mohammed Shour, the team held on to secure the victory.

Key performers

Mohammed Shour

The academy keeper has not had the best start to 2026, appearing in only 3 games and giving up 7 goals against in those appearances. However, this latest start may be a jumping off point to more playing time through the rest of the year. Shour only had to make 4 saves but each one of them was a dangerous chance, none more than in the 86th minute. Real Monarchs got the ball to Lineker Rodrigues just outside the 6 yard box, and after he cut back his shot was saved on a diving effort by Shour. This was Shour’s first shutout of the year and his career.

Mark Bronnik

Bronnik had only a few chances throughout the game finishing the game with 3 shots but he was dangerous with each one of them highlighted by his 0.74 xG. Outside of being goal dangerous, he was more involved in buildup, completing 10 of 11 passes with 1 key pass. He seems to be getting more comfortable in the striker position as well as gelling with his new team.

Mark O'Neill

The versatile O’Neill has become a mainstay in the central midfield and was excellent in this game. His calling card is his defensive acumen, which was on display with 1 interception, 4 clearances, 2 blocked shots, and 3 recoveries. He also was putting himself into every challenge he could by winning 10 of 23 combined ground and aerial duels. What stood out today, was his offensive play where he assisted on Bronniks goal, had 2 key passes and completed 35 of 42 passes. This is the type of all around play that will get more eyes on his potential first team prospects.
