Seattle Reign visited Racing Louisville for a midweek match featuring two of the hottest teams since the summer break. While the Reign got off to another fast start, it was Racing who ultimately claimed all three points in a 2-1 win.
The Reign dominated the first half-hour of the match. Maddie Mercado opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a banger from the top of the box into the upper corner and it looked like Seattle might run away with this game. Racing settled into the game after the half-hour mark and adjusted their press, controlling the rest of the half. Emma Sears scored an equalizer for the hosts in the 35th minute on Racing’s first real chance of the game, getting behind the Reign defense on a line-breaking pass from midfield and slotting it calmly to the near post.
Racing struck first coming out of the halftime break, with Sears getting her second of the night after the Reign turned over the ball in their own third. No one picked up Sears streaking into the box, and her shot deflected off Phoebe McClernon’s leg and then off Claudia Dickey’s foot and into the goal. Louisville kept the Reign unsettled for the entire second half, clogging lanes, blocking shots and limiting them to only one high-quality chance off a corner which Jordyn Bloomer parried away.
WHAT WORKED: Another fast start
Seattle came out on the front foot and absolutely dominated the first half-hour of the game. Mia Fishel had three shots in the first three minutes and the team had nine shots overall, including a lovely two-touch juggle and shot from Nerilia Mondesir which she put right into Jordyn Bloomer’s hands and Maddie Mercado’s seventh goal of the season, this time a crack from the top of the box into the upper 90.

At the other end, Racing had no touches in the Reign box and only one half-hearted shot from 30 yards out which went well wide of Claudia Dickey’s goal. Once again, it felt as if the Reign would run rampant and play an opponent out of the park. But…
WHAT DIDN’T WORK: Finishing those chances
The Reign took 22 shots in this game, second only to the 24 they took against Chicago on Friday. Once again they came away with only one goal to show for it. Only five of those shots were on target, while another 10 were blocked. The opportunities were there if the team was a bit more clinical about their shot placement. Similarly the team earned 12 corners (to Racing’s zero) and Mondésir provided some fantastic service into the box, but far too often the ball bounced harmlessly through the box before an attacking boot could get to it. The last time the Reign scored off a corner was four games ago, against San Diego; since then they have taken over 30.
WHAT DIDN’T WORK: Reacting quickly to counters
Racing was more than happy to let the Reign hold the ball, and Seattle finished the game with nearly 66% possession. As expected, Louisville instead looked to force errors and turnovers which they could then quickly. capitalize on. Seattle did well to not fall into any traps early and was passing very effectively around and past the Louisville press, but as fatigue set in late in the first half they got exposed off a turnover near midfield. With two quick passes Racing broke through two lines of Reign defense and had Emma Sears in on goal alone, and she did not squander the opportunity.

Sears got her brace early in the second half off another Reign turnover and quick reaction. This time nobody in white picked up her run into the box, but Lauren Milliet saw the move and crossed the ball in. Sears’ shot deflected off Phoebe McClernon and left Claudia Dickey wrong-footed, and Racing had two goals with their only two shots on net to that point.

QUOTES
“We stopped doing the things that caused them a problem”
Reign head coach Laura Harvey was blunt in her assessment of what went wrong after the promising start, identifying that more than Racing adapting to them, it was her own side who hit a wall and were no longer executing on the aspects of the game plan which had been so effective over the first half-hour.
“I thought in the first 20, 25 minutes we played exactly the way we'd planned. And then we stopped doing those things. […] And I just thought in the second half we stopped doing the things that caused them a problem in the first half and they didn't really change until sort of the last 5 minutes of the game. So overall, just disappointed that we started so well and couldn't be clinical and punish them in those moments. And then when the game started to get challenging, we stopped doing those things.”
“It's on us to just put the ball in the back of the net”
While the Reign have now scored in 10 straight games, the last two have seen them take the most shots of the season with only one goal to show for it in each game. When asked what the team might need to do to start converting more of those chances into goals, Maddie Mercado was reflective about the need for the team to be a bit more focused now that they are generating a lot of quality chances.
“I think finishing a lot is repetition, and I think it's on us to kind of get those reps in training, and I know our games are a little bit back-to-back right now. But again, I think it's on us when we get in front of goal to be calm and just put the ball in the back of the net, which is a lot of times much easier said than done, but it's something that we're going to continue to work on. And I think the good thing is we are creating a lot of those chances. And I do believe that they're going to start to fall for us.”
Seattle won’t have much time to dwell on this result. Tomorrow they head to Kansas City to prepare for a Saturday afternoon game against the Current. That game kicks off at 3:30 PM PT and will air on Ion.
