On Sunday evening, Seattle Reign hosted a Houston Dash side just two points behind them in a tight playoff race. While the Reign dominated from start to finish, they struggled to convert their many chances. Fortunately, in the 52nd minute, a Maddie Mercado cross slipped through to Maddie Dahlien on the far post, who calmly chipped a shot into an open net with her first touch.
The Reign finished with a 1-0 victory in the first of a three-game homestand.
The win kept the Reign (9-8-4) in eighth place, the final playoff spot, with a game in hand over every team above them on the league table.
Up next is a match against fourth-place San Diego Wave (12-7-3). That game kicks off Sunday, September 6, at 6 p.m. PT and will air on ESPN2.

"Huge. I think we controlled the game. I said to the players at the end there, I think we need to be more ruthless through the last couple of games. This game it didn't hurt us, Chicago it didn't hurt us, Louisville it hurt us. We were arguably as dominant in the Louisville game, they just had two good chances and scored, and we would've kicked ourselves tonight if that had been the case. On Ainsley McCammon's development ahead of her U-20 call-up:
"Very, very good. I've been joking with her all week that it's such a weird emotion right now to know that she's going away. I'm really happy for her, I'm really proud of her, but I'm devastated all in the same emotion, because she's been exceptional, especially second half today. I thought she broke play up, gets little — and that's been a big part of her development, her movement off the ball to read things and be able to solve problems, which maybe earlier in her career with us she wouldn't be able to get there, and now she gets there. I'm so proud of her and Emeri [Adames] going away to represent this club on a world stage — but yeah, devastated at the same time."

"Tough. I don't know, honestly. I think Sof [Huerta] would be in that discussion too. Even today we flipped sides, because what Houston was starting to do on our left, I thought suited Curry — I thought we could solve that with Curry, and I thought we were getting more of the ball on the right side. So between the three of them, it's an amazing problem to have. With what it's given, Curry — she's taken a lot of I want to say the brunt of minutes, and it maybe sounds negative, I don't mean it that way. She's had to put her body on the line a lot for this club, and being able to sort of manage her back in at this stage of the season is great. "There's no doubt this has been Phoebe's best year at this club. I had a meeting with her this week and said that to her. She's a better leader than she was before, just growing into that, she takes that responsibility on really well. I thought tonight she was very, very good. It was always really hard for me to see this club without the Lus, Pinoes, and the Jess's in it, and this group — especially someone like Phoebe — makes me go, how we've been able to help Phoebe. On Sam Meza's return from injury:
"Honestly, I think the break did her really, really good. Even in training this week she's just been buzzing around all over the place. Sam's played a lot of minutes since the start of 2025, and maybe as much as it was a little muscle injury, maybe it was a body just saying, 'I need a break.' It wasn't a big deal, but giving her that ability to have a breather was great. Then we knew tonight we needed to get her in and get her minutes up with Ainsley leaving. So, happy for her. I thought she played well. Again, just being Sam, breaking things up and moving the ball to someone else."

"It wasn't really a wake-up. It was more just solving some of the problems that we thought they were giving us and showing pictures of ways that we thought we could be a little bit more dominant. "I need to put those away, point blank. I have cleat marks on my ankle from the second one. I don't know what they saw, but I just think being more clinical in those moments, I don't even have to hope for a PK. But I think we're getting in the right spaces and my teammates are putting good balls in, and I think they'll come. I just need to continue to get my opportunities and get in those spots."
McCammon, on her upcoming U-20 call-up:
"I'm super excited, it's always such an honor to play for your country. Obviously I'm going to really miss being here and playing with the Reign and with all of my great teammates, but it's a big opportunity to go play on a world stage, and hope to go win it. It's also really fun to be able to go with some teammates — with Emeri and Evan [O'Steen] — and kind of play for the badge and play with those teammates. I'm super excited, but I'm going to miss everybody. There were some happy tears at the end of the game."
McCammon, on controlling the midfield for large stretches:
"I think we were doing a lot of really good things. We've been really working on our shape behind the ball and how we can suffocate teams, so that was really good today. I don't think Houston could really ever get out, so that helped us keep our momentum going. In the second half, we got even more chances and were able to put them away a little more. First half, I think the quality on the final ball was a little bit off, but we had really good momentum and were doing really good things. Super proud of the team's performance tonight."
McCammon, on Sam Meza's return from injury:
"It's always great to have her back. Defensively she adds so much to the team — obviously Haz did great in the last two games, but it was really nice to have Sam back. I think we have good chemistry, and defensively she does such a good job winning first and second balls and calming it down and keeping our momentum going, which goes with suffocating them. It was great to have her back."
McCammon, on her development and growing role in the midfield:
"I think it just comes with getting some consistent minutes. Last year was really good, but I've been able to build more on that momentum. Something I've talked with coaches a lot about is it doesn't always have to be a perfect ball, but just hitting it in spaces where I know we have Maddie [Dahlien] and Maddie Mercado running on the back line and we have a lot of speed there. So putting it in spaces where it can hurt them has been something I've been really focusing on, and just not forcing it too much. If it's not on, not trying to play it, which is always a work in progress. But being able to get consistent minutes has been huge for me."
Dahlien, on McCammon's growth:
"Her maturity on and off the field is second to none. I think she's one of the best passers in the league, and like she said, last year she just had to wait for her moment and she's completely grabbed it. It's just really cool to see how she's taken off this year. She's been huge for us, and really underrated in my opinion. I'm really proud of her."
Dahlien, on her connection with Maddie Mercado, who assisted the winning goal:
"That's another one where I think she's always had that in her, and we've cultivated a really good relationship. We've worked a lot on crossing to each other the last few weeks, so I'm happy to finally see that connection come to life. Maddie's just such a hard worker — she does a lot of the work off the ball that maybe doesn't necessarily get the stats, but the stats are coming with her this year. I'm just really happy for her, she's been really huge for us."
On managing the final 15 minutes of games after Houston's history of scoring late:
McCammon: "I think always at the end of games, especially the past few ones, we've been harping on how we can manage and see games out. The Gotham game comes to mind, how that didn't go as we planned it to. We've really honed in on how we can close out games, especially when we're in the lead. How we can manage it, put the ball in places where it's not going to hurt us. I think we were phenomenal tonight, I think the backline was brilliant, Claudia too.
Dahlien: "I thought JB [Jordyn Bugg] and Phoebe did a phenomenal job of winning first balls, and our midfield did a really good job of winning second balls."
On the security of playing in front of the club's back line:
McCammon: "I think knowing that we have Phoebe behind us eases all of the pressure on us. She's such a beast, she can win any ball. Obviously she was brilliant tonight, I don't know if anybody really even got behind her. Her and JB together, they're unstoppable. I think just knowing — especially being right in front of her — she's constantly talking to me too, so having that communication aspect of it too, she's just such a leader on the field. Knowing that she has that defensive presence behind us is huge for us."
