The winning and undefeated streaks came to an end for the Seattle Sounders as they lost 1–0 on the road against FC Dallas on Wednesday. Despite arguably having the better play throughout the game, a special goal from Kaick Ferreira in the 63rd won the day for Dallas.

With a temperature of 83 degrees at kickoff time that felt like 89 with nearly 70% humidity, it felt like the road trip and the weather had worn down Seattle’s attacking edge. Although the Sounders created quality chances throughout the first 45 minutes — both sides took 7 shots, but Seattle generated 1.18 Expected Goals to 0.54 for Dallas, according to Fotmob — they couldn’t quite find the finish they needed.

Dejan Joveljić had several good looks as he took 4 shots in the first half and forced saves from FCD goalkeeper Daniel on three of them, but the best chance of the night belonged to Jackson Ragen. Ragen got on the end of an Albert Rusnák free kick from a dangerous spot in the 19th minute, but the slight touch he got with his foot wasn’t quite enough to beat the GK.

As the two sides went into halftime, there was a sense that the Sounders would rue their missed chances. Dallas didn’t wait long to start putting Seattle under pressure as they had a pair of shots within the first few minutes, including one that forced a save from Andrew Thomas in the 46th minute after a Ragen giveaway set up a shot at the near post for Kaick. He was denied on that particular play, but in the 63rd minute, Bernard Kamungo had a cross blocked out for a corner by Stuart Hawkins. On the ensuing corner, Cristian Roldan managed to head away the initial service but that clearance went to Osaze Urhoghide who headed it toward Kaick. He took it cleanly out of the air with a volley that smashed into the top corner.

Following the goal, the Sounders pushed for a response and Dallas were largely happy to sit in and let Seattle smash themselves upon their defensive wall. Seattle took 8 shots to FCD’s 4 once they were chasing the game, but for all their effort only a shot from Snyder Brunell in the 75th minute even required a save. His shot from the top of the box forced a solid stop from Daniel and Joveljić nearly capitalized on the rebound but ultimately only came away with a corner.

On top of the loss, Nouhou also broke his hand and was forced out of the game in the 59th minute. He had gone up for a header against a pair of Dallas players and seemed to get his hand stuck between them. After receiving attention on the field he was subbed off and seemed to be in serious pain despite his frustration about leaving the game.

The Sounders will have a chance to bounce back from this loss with a return home to face CF Montreal on Saturday.

Lineups

Four changes from Saturday’s starters with Paul Arriola picking up from his goal and assist as a sub to start on the left wing as Sebastian Gomez moves to the right and Jordan Morris heads to the bench. Snyder Brunell replaces Hassani Dotson in midfield alongside Cristian Roldan, and the full right side of the defense switches out. Kalani Kossa-Rienzi starts and right back and Stuart Hawkins starts at right centerback next to Jackson Ragen with Alex Roldan and Yeimar available in the match day squad.

82’ - Sub. Both sides make changes as Dallas takes off Bernard Kamungo in favor of Herman Johansson while Seattle swaps Caden Clark and Peter Kingston for Snyder Brunell and Stuart Hawkins.

88’ - Chance. Rusnák takes a low shot from the edge of the box, but as Joveljić attempts to get out of the way the shot hits him and goes out for a goal kick.

90’ - Chance. Morris plays Clark into the box and he sends a ball across goal that earns Seattle a corner.

90 +8’ - Chance. Rusnák sends in a cross that Kingston attempts to flick towards goal, but it goes out for a goal kick.

Quick thoughts

An unsatisfying evening: It’s probably fair to argue that the Sounders deserved more than they got from this game based on their performance. They had more shots, more xG, held 57% of possession, and were credited with two 'big chances’ to FCD’s one. In sports and in life, though, ‘deserved’ has very little to do with the actual results. Seattle may have ‘deserved’ to get more based on their performance, but to get what they deserved they needed to realize some of those expected goals. Daniel deserves some credit for Seattle’s inability to convert, but you’ve got to beat good teams with good players if you want to get anything from a given season. Dallas are a solid team, the exact kind of team they’ll certainly need to at least get a result against on the road when the playoffs come around should they earn a place in the postseason.

All streaks end: Nothing lasts forever. We’ve seen plenty of streaks end already this season: winning streaks, unbeaten streaks, and losing streaks alike. We all knew that this run wasn’t likely to carry us through MLS Cup, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating to see the unbeaten and winning streaks end with this game. The good news is that this result doesn’t undo the good of those streaks, even if it does put a likely ceiling on how high the team can climb in the standings over the final five games. They’ll still need to bounce back quickly, as a loss on the road to a top-3 team in the West may be frustrating but anything less than a win at home against one of the league’s worst teams in Montreal would be much worse for confidence if nothing else.

Lacking sharpness: The blunt edge of Seattle’s attack was probably most obvious in this game as the Sounders were shut out for the first time since their 0–0 draw against Red Bull New York on Sept. 5. Joveljić had six shots, four of them on target, and couldn’t find the back of the net. Rusnák created five chances that all went wanting and Jordan Morris got into several dangerous spots as a sub but only managed a single shot and no chances created. That lack of sharpness exhibited itself elsewhere as well, both in some of Seattle’s defending and in their passing out of the back. On at least three separate occasions, Ragen played a loose pass that immediately turned into Dallas attacks, and he wasn’t the only culprit throughout the game. The team’s performances have improved, but this game was a reminder that there’s still plenty of improving that can still be done over the final weeks of the season.

Notable quote

More Roldan: “I think we leave this road trip with a bit of pride, with a bit of confidence going into our next game. But if we don't take advantage of being at home against Montreal on a short week, then then we're going to have some frustrating thoughts. We need to now bounce back on Saturday.”

Player spotlight

Snyder Brunell had a solid performance of a different sort than we’ve typically seen from him. He had 7 defensive contributions, 6 tackles, won 8/10 ground duels and 2/3 aerial duels. That was paired with some of his usual fare as he completed 1/1 dribble and played 8 passes into the final third.
