After last week's win put Seattle Reign back into 8th place, the final playoff position, they have another critical home match with plenty of playoff implications this week. On Friday, October 2, the Reign host the North Carolina Courage at Lumen Field, a team that sits just one point below Seattle on the league table.
The Friday night match kicks off at 7 p.m. PT and will stream on NWSL+.
For a club that's spent the back half of the season clawing its way up the table, the locker room knows the stakes. Defender Jordyn Bugg, who signed a contract extension through 2030 this week, said it's critical to get results in the team's last four matches. "We know that we are like on the cusp of making playoffs and not making playoffs," she said, adding that "every game we have left is a must-win."
Head coach Laura Harvey also acknowledged what's riding on this game, noting that while it's "another home game" in isolation, everyone around the team understands there's a bigger outcome potentially attached to it.

Who to watch
Ashley Sanchez
The left winger is having a career year, scoring 20 goals this season (on 13.7 xG) — tied for the league record. Part of that is how consistently Sanchez has converted chances and gotten on the end of balls into the box. But also, the Courage have figured out how to best use Sanchez, which often means pulling defenders away from her to create space on the left wing. The Reign absolutely cannot let Sanchez cut inside to her preferred right foot, as she seems to keep curling those shots into the far-post corner this season.

Evelyn Ijeh
This is the first year in a while that the Courage have had a more traditional striker in Ijeh, and it's sure paying off for them. She has 11 goals and four assists, often getting in behind defenses. Ijeh has allowed a Courage squad that has traditionally broken opponents down through deliberate passing and possession to become more direct. The heart of the Reign's defense will need to lock in on Friday.
And just look at what Ijeh unlocks for Sanchez. Yikes. She's good.
love this clever flicked assist from ijeh

Riley Jackson
After dealing with an injury, Riley Jackson is back in the lineup and making an impact in the midfield. As a reward for her season, the 20-year-old just got called up for the U.S. U-23 WNT camp alongside the Reign's Jordyn Bugg, Maddie Dahlien, and Mia Fishel. Jackson, like Ainsley McCammon, has a real ability to find the right forward pass to unlock North Carolina's attack. She leads the Courage in chances created (45) and long balls per 90.

What to watch
A dominant offense vs. a steady defense
The Reign have recorded five consecutive clean sheets at home, the first NWSL club to accomplish this. To keep this streak alive, they will need to slow down the league's best offense. The Courage lead the league in goals (49) and are second in expected goals and big chances created. The Courage average 51.4% possession but use that ball movement to find direct, fast-break goal-scoring opportunities. The Reign have managed to keep these kinds of teams in front of them at home in recent months. Can they repeat that again on Friday?

Harvey framed the defensive game plan around prevention rather than cure, saying the staff wants to "limit their ability to get the ball in the areas that they want Sanchez and Ijeh to get it." Look for the Reign to try disrupting those passing lanes before Sanchez or Ijeh ever touch the ball, rather than trying to defend them once they're already in dangerous positions.
Bugg emphasized that the Reign have worked hard on staying in games for a full 90 minutes. "We know that teams in this league have a habit of scoring post-90 plus minutes. So just staying strong throughout the entire game is something we've definitely worked on and become better at."
The space on the left
One reason Sanchez is getting so many great goal-scoring opportunities has nothing to do with her time on the ball. It's the space her teammates are creating for her. In fact, she averages among the fewest touches per match. As Harvey noted before the Reign's first match against North Carolina back in July, the Courage often move the ball down the right side of the pitch and then switch it to Sanchez, leveraging the space they've opened up.
"A lot of teams force the ball away from her, but then she hurts you on the switch. And I think that that's something that we're mindful of, that she sort of hangs out on that left-hand side and they get a lot of people on the right-hand side that you have to defend and then they try and switch it on you," Harvey said.
The Reign will have to try to prevent these passes into her and make sure they close down quickly if they get through.
On the other end, Maddie Dahlien will face right back Ryan Williams, a critical part of North Carolina's attack. Williams often makes overlapping runs on the right flank and whips crosses into the box. The Reign will need to defend those overloads well while also looking for Dahlien in transition on the left wing — especially when Williams pushes high.
Honoring a legend
The Reign will recognize Jess Fishlock in their second-ever Queen's Match. Fishlock, who will retire at the end of the season, scored a brace last week to give the Reign a critical 2-0 win over the Boston Legacy. Those two goals propelled Fishlock past Megan Rapinoe as the club's all-time leading goal-scorer (at least for regular-season goals). The Reign are honoring her with a ticket package that includes a Fishlock bobblehead. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will also get an exclusive Jess Fishlock collectible pin. Five random fans will receive a golden pin and will have an opportunity to go on the pitch post-match to meet Fishlock.
