Neither the Seattle Sounders nor Atlanta United come into today's game in particularly good form. Atlanta lost its last two regular-season games before the Leagues Cup break, where they managed just one point in two games and were eliminated in the group stage, while the Sounders claimed just one point in their final two regular-season games before getting outscored 7-2 in a pair of group-stage losses.

Overall, the two teams are experiencing similarly up-and-down campaigns, albeit in very different ways. Atlanta is seventh in the Eastern Conference with 35 points, while the Sounders are fourth in the West with 36 points. Atlanta has done most of their damage with a high-flying offense that has scored 42 goals, third most in MLS. The Sounders have been far more defense-oriented, allowing just 23 goals (second fewest in the league).

This game will mark the return of a trio of former Sounders – midfielder Osvaldo Alonso, head coach Gonzalo Pineda and CEO Garth Lagerwey will all be in town.

Notes

  • The Sounders have a 1-1-3 record against Atlanta United, with each team having one win at home.
  • The Sounders are just 1-0-3 in their last four home games, outscoring opponents 2-1.
  • United has won just 3 of 29 road games dating to April of last year and are just 2-5-5 on the road this year.
  • Thiago Almada has five non-penalty set-piece goals this year, two more than anyone else in MLS.
  • Smoke from wildfires is likely to make conditions potentially dangerous for outdoor activity. Although there's no indication that this game could be postponed, fans should take that under advisement.
