Ship's log, May 12: Cristian Roldan is on fire

The veteran midfielder is playing some of the best soccer of his career

Amid a torrid stretch of attacking soccer for the Seattle Sounders, the contributions of Cristian Roldan haven't garnered a ton of the headlines.

But as we marvel at the exploits of Ryan Kent and the historic goal-scoring run of Danny Musovski, spare a thought for Seattle's do-everything midfielder. He might just be playing some of the best soccer we've seen him play in an already distinguished career.

Watch any of Seattle's matches during this five-match unbeaten streak and you'll see an unmistakable theme: No. 7 making lung-busting runs across seemingly every square inch of the pitch, cleaning up messes, winning possession, and springing counters with precision passing. If you wanted confirmation of the eye test, these underlying metrics are truly ridiculous.

There are a lot of things to like about the way this team is playing right now, but the level of play from the double-pivot of Roldan and Obed Vargas is high on the list.

We've all witnessed Vargas's ascent to stardom firsthand, but it's worth noting that he's grading out at a similarly elite level to his midfield partner. If there are any better midfield duos in the league, it wouldn't be a long list.

With Vargas increasingly the subject of transfer speculation, how much longer we get to watch this exact iteration of the double-pivot is an open question.

Let's enjoy it while we can.
