Quotes

SOUNDERS FC HEAD COACH BRIAN SCHMETZER

On tonight’s win over San Diego:

“Nobody is going to care two months from now [that it wasn’t our best performance]. The thing that we’ll do with this game is we’ll obviously assess the first half. And was it more than just the technical breakdown? I mean Obed [Vargas] must have lost four balls in a row. Was it more than just the technical piece? Did we get something wrong tactically? Did we not cover something when they pressed? We have got to look at that. But what I can tell you, what I might repeat is that Stefan Frei is the best goalkeeper in this league. You can talk about goalkeepers that want to play with their feet and help in possession. But Stef makes every save that he has to. And their guy tonight didn’t. Now I’m not taking anything off of Jesús [Ferreira] because it was a good turn and Paul [Rothrock] does his job. But Stefan Frei is the best shot-stopping goalkeeper in this league bar none. I don’t care. It’s a fact. And then you get some of the intangibles. [Stuart] Hawkins, I mean come on, he’s defending against Chucky Lozano, he’s doing what he needs to do. The kid might have made one mistake, or the ball dropped or he’s a little slow but the kid’s great. Jonathan Bell comes in last game, does his job. He’s quiet, nice kid, well-rounded kid, does his job, and we’re so thin but those guys come in and do a great job. [João Paulo] comes in and does exactly what we asked him to, wins some tackles, gets some balls, gives us a little composure, little bit of smarts, brains. Kalani [Kossa-Rienzi], talk about a game kid. When he tried to chip the goalkeeper, we had a couple of chances to get to 2-0, maybe he should have slipped Pedro [de la Vega], but I’m not going to kill the kid because Albert [Rusnák] when he does his little twirl, when he plays Pedro right away, Pedro’s in on goal and it’s 2-0. So, I can’t kill Kalani, I can’t kill Albert because they put it in, but that was a gritty performance and that’s why I liked it.”

SOUNDERS FC DEFENDER STUART HAWKINS

On the messaging from the coaching staff before he subbed on:

“I appreciate the coaching staff trusting me in that situation. Keep it simple, connect your first few passes, get into the game and then just play your game. You’ve played the game of soccer your whole life, so enjoy it.”

SOUNDERS FC FORWARD JESÚS FERREIRA

On scoring his first goal for Seattle:

“I think it’s obviously an award from my teammates, trust from them, trust from the coaching staff, they believe and them having my back at the end of the day. Every game I try to score, try to assist and try to give my all and my best. Obviously it’s something I’ve been working on and so finally it happened and I’m so grateful that my teammates always had my back through it all.”
