Fresh off his longest appearance in a MLS match, Stuart Hawkins will now head to Marbella, Spain after being called into the United States U19 team for a camp that will run June 2-10 and feature friendlies against Spain (June 7) and Ukraine (June 10). Hawkins could remain with the Sounders through this Sunday’s game against Minnesota United, but will definitely miss the June 8 match against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Still just 18, Hawkins already has played more than 5,500 professional minutes, has logged at least 2,000 in each of the past two seasons with Tacoma Defiance and is now starting to get MLS minutes with the Sounders.
Hawkins has made two appearances with the Sounders this year, eight minutes in a blowout loss to LAFC and a 57-minute outing on Wednesday against San Diego FC, in which he was called into emergency action after Kim Kee-hee went down with an injury. Hawkins completed 13 of 17 passes, made four clearances and registered his first shot while doing his part to keep San Diego from scoring.
"He was unexpectedly good," Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said when asked to assess Hawkins' performance. "We have high hopes for him. If the kid can continue to put together performances like that, if you can show us he can do that on a consistent basis, he's ready."
