For the first time in their careers, Seattle Reign players Jess Fishlock and Angharad James-Turner will be playing in a major tournament with the Welsh National Team. Wales beat the Republic of Ireland 3-2 in a two-game series to qualify for the UEFA Women's EURO, which kicks off on July 2.

Fishlock and James-Turner will play alongside Welsh defender Lily Woodham, who signed with the Reign last year but has been on loan to Crystal Palace and whose future with the Reign appears uncertain. These Reign players will join club teammate Ana-Maria Crnogorčević in the tournament, who is representing the host country, Switzerland.

Qualifying for the tournament has been massive for Wales, which didn't have a full-time manager on the women's side until 2010 and didn't feature names on the women's jerseys until 2019, according to The Guardian. Now, a mural of Jess Fishlock — Wales' all-time leading goal scorer, men or women — covers the entire playing area of a five-a-side football pitch in Cardiff.

It won't be an easy tournament for Wales, who have been sorted into the "group of death", Group D, alongside England, France, and the Netherlands. With James-Turner captaining the team, Fishlock healthy again, and a strong mixture of veterans and young players, Wales has an organized defense and the kind of grit that could help the debutants play spoiler.

The hosts, Switzerland, are paired with Finland, Iceland, and Norway. Finland is the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, but they have a solid defense. Iceland is the top-ranked country in Switzerland's Group A, with Norway closely behind. Crnogorčević has 168 caps for Switzerland and leads the nation in scoring, with 74 goals since she debuted in 2009. The forward has been dealing with an injury this month, but appears to be ready for the tournament.

"I'm going to be lucky enough to be able to go to the Euros for a couple of games in July," Reign head coach Laura Harvey told reporters after the team's win against Utah. "For us, we've got three players. Ana, home nation. That's crazy to think what that's going to be for her country. And I've got to give Jess and Haz [James-Turner] a special mention. For Wales to qualify for a major tournament is so special. And to see Jess on a major stage ... well. I'll probably have a little tear in my eye, to be honest."

Sixteen teams qualified for the Women's EURO. The first and second-place teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinal round, which begins on July 16.

Other Reign players on international duty

  • Four Reign players were called up to the U.S. Women's National Team for three matches: Lynn Biyendolo and Claudia Dickey return to the USWNT, while Jordyn Bugg and Sam Meza received their first senior call-ups. The U.S. plays the Republic of Ireland on June 26 and 29, and Canada on July 2.

  • Ainsley McCammon was called up to a joint U-18/U-19 U.S. Women's National Team camp. All players in this group are age-eligible for the next U-20 Women's World Cup in 2026. There are also no games planned for this group.
