The Seattle Sounders face a Peter Vermes-less Sporting KC for the first time ever today when they visit Children’s Mercy Park. Vermes was fired back in March after KC started 0-5-1 and have been pretty respectable ever since, playing at a clip of 1.47 ppg under interim coach Kerry Zivagnin that has allowed them to climb to within three points of the playoff line.
The actual results, though, mask a team that has been giving up a remarkable amount of chances. Sporting KC allow more xG than any team in the league, something that has actually gotten worse since the coaching change. Included in that is a defense that allows 2.0 actual goals per game at home.
The Sounders have probably been better than their record shows on the road, as well. They are 2-5-3 away from Lumen Field, but have the ninth best road xGD in the league.

- This is the Sounders’ first road game in over a month and their first time outside of the West Coast in two months.
- The Sounders have an all-time record of 5-7-2 on the road against Kansas City.
