Seattle Reign FC midfielder Ji So-yun has been loaned to Birmingham City of the WSL2 through the end of 2025, the clubs announced today. With Ji’s NWSL contract up at the end of 2025, this move likely spells the end of the South Korean international’s time with the Reign.
Birmingham City just missed out on promotion to the Women’s Super League last season, drawing with London City Lionesses 2-2 on the final day to finish two points behind them at the top of the table. Their 2025-26 season kicks off on Sunday against Bristol City.
“We have great respect for Ji and the impact she’s made at our club as a veteran of our sport,” said Seattle Reign FC General Manager Lesle Gallimore in a team release. “This move reflects her desire to play consistent minutes in a competitive environment, and we’re confident she will continue to showcase her quality at Birmingham City.”
Ji first joined the Reign on a transfer from South Korean club Suwon FC ahead of the 2024 season. She made 39 appearances over the past two NWSL seasons, scoring five goals and contributing five assists over that span, but has seen her playing time diminish this year as the team has shifted to a new formation and tactics.
Although the NWSL’s summer transfer window is closed, the Reign still have an opportunity to make use of the newly opened roster spot and international slot before rosters freeze at noon Pacific Time on October 9. They can sign a free agent player from overseas, make a trade within the league, or sign a youth player to their first contract.
