From the moment the ball left Pedro de la Vega’s foot, it felt like we were watching something special. Taking an Alex Roldan 50-yard switch out of the air, de la Vega’s volley hit the the far post, down into the back support and finally off the near post. The perfect strike sealed a 7-0 Sounders win over Cruz Azul and set the tone for the Leagues Cup trophy.
As many expected, it has now been short-listed for a Puskás Award, which FIFA gives to the goal that is considered the most aesthetically pleasing or beautiful. In a contest like this, the fact that de la Vega’s shot never touched the net nor the ground actually counts for something.
The goal is one of 10 nominated and a panel of experts will select the winner from the final three voted on by fans. You can cast your vote here.
