Reed Baker-Whiting’s cash-for-player trade to Nashville SC was made official on Wednesday. The Seattle Sounders will receive $800,000 guaranteed, plus another $300,000 in potential add-ons while also retaining a 20% sell-on fee, Sounder at Heart confirmed.
The 20-year-old is the fourth Homegrown player the Sounders have either traded or transferred in the last 12 months, netting the team nearly $7 million in a combination of GAM and transfer fees. The Sounders have now maxed out the $3 million they can convert from cash to GAM in 2026, with a little more than half of Baker-Whiting’s fee eligible for conversion.
“Reed is a great example of the strength of our player development pathway and what’s possible for young players who come through our system,” Sounders General Manager & Chief Soccer Officer Craig Waibel said in a team statement. “He’s worked hard, represented this club the right way and made meaningful contributions during his time in Seattle. We’re grateful for everything he’s given to the Sounders and the commitment he’s shown every day. At the same time, we’re excited for him as he takes on this new opportunity in Nashville and we wish him nothing but success in the next chapter of his career.”
Of all those Homegrowns, Baker-Whiting was the one with the longest history with the Sounders. The Seattle native first joined the Sounders Discovery Program as an 11-year-old and moved his way through each level of the team's pro pathway. Baker-Whiting made his MLS debut in 2021 as a 15-year-old and finishes his Sounders career with 75 MLS appearances, which included 15 last year.
“I’m incredibly thankful to the Sounders for all the moments and memories I’ve been able to experience here,” Baker-Whiting said. “Growing up in Seattle, this club has always meant so much to me, so having the chance to be developed by and represent my hometown team is something I’ll always be proud of. I’m grateful to the coaches, staff, my teammates and the fans for the support they’ve given me along the way. Seattle will always have a special place in my heart.”
