We are officially back for MLS match action. That means it's time to step into the shoes of the Sounders staff and break down the first league test of 2026: the Colorado Rapids.
Kickoff is set for 6:15 PM PST at Lumen Field, streaming on Apple TV.
Below is a data-driven match-week 1 preview – what to expect stylistically, where the game could tilt, and which players might decide the outcome.
Style of Play Overview

In 2025, Colorado were one of just three teams classified by our friends at Futi as a "Bunker and Counter" side. That identity shows up clearly in the data:
- 7th percentile in patient buildup
- 20th percentile in high press
- 97th percentile in direct transitions

The Rapids didn't linger on the ball when in possession in their defensive third. Once possession was won, they looked to go vertical and direct quickly.
Defensively, while they liked to sit deep against sustained buildup, they were aggressive in the immediate moments after losing possession. Colorado counter-pressed at a very high rate relative to the rest of the league.
With Chris Armas departed and Colorado ranking 24th in returning minutes from 2025, the continuity of the team's style of play is uncertain. No one is certain how the team will play under the leadership of former Tottenham assistant coach, Matt Wells.
Seattle, meanwhile, enter 2026 league play with a stable returning core. If you read our breakdown of, "Schmetzer Ball," you know what to expect: patient progression, attacking from the wings, organized possession, high-pressing.
Head-to-Head Stat Comparisons
Looking at 2025 side-by-side metrics, Seattle held the edge in goals scored, expected goals, passing counts, and field tilt. The stylistic contrast between both of these teams in 2025 influenced a lot of these gaps. I expect for Seattle to edge out the Rapids in terms of field tilt and ball possession but both teams will generate chances.

Players to Keep an Eye On
Colorado's roster turnover has been significant in the off-season. Of their top 10 performers in total PV+ from 2025, only four remain. Mihailovic, Bassett, Larraz, Maxso, Awaziem, and Harris are all gone. That is a massive reshuffle.
