Opposition players to watch
Timo Werner — Once one of the top players in Europe, Werner is no longer quite at that level despite having just turned 30 years old. In his first few appearances for the Earthquakes, though, he’s looked spry and dangerous. He’s expected to get his first MLS start today.
Preston Judd — Certainly not the highest-profile player on the roster, Judd is sneakily becoming a reliable attacking threat. The forward already has two goals this year and is coming off a six-game campaign in which he played just 1,057 minutes. He’ll be someone the Sounders must watch.
Stats to look smart
9 — The Earthquakes are off to the best start in their history with nine points in three games. It’s worth pointing out that the three teams they’ve beaten (Sporting KC, Atlanta United and Philadelphia Union) came into this weekend with just one point between them, although Atlanta beat Philadelphia and Sporting KC topped the LA Galaxy on Saturday.
3 — The Sounders are coming off a 3-0 road win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in Concacaf Champions Cup play on Thursday. It was the Sounders’ largest-ever margin of victory in Concacaf road game and tied their record for most road goals in a game.
Tactics to impress
- The Sounders have started to establish themselves as a team that likes to press high up the pitch, but then drop back into more of a low block if that doesn’t work out. Against St. Louis, though, they lowered their line of confrontation considerably. Especially with as much rotation as they’re expected to make, look for that tactic to repeat.
- The Earthquakes have been the stingiest defense in MLS this year, having yet to allow a goal. That’s a far cry from how they were playing a year ago when they were one of the leakiest defenses in the league. Especially at home, they will likely be a bit more open.
