Georgi Minoungou has been traded to the Colorado Rapids, Sounder at Heart has confirmed. The news was first reported by Niko Moreno, and Tom Bogert later followed up with his own report that the Sounders will receive $2 million in General Allocation Money. The Sounders will also retain a "small" sell-on percentage.
It was not immediately clear when the Sounders would receive that money. Based on Sounder at Heart's reporting, the Sounders are already due to have about $3 million in GAM for any moves they might make in the summer. Given that, it would make some sense if the Sounders were will to defer at least some of the money from the Rapids until next season.
Regardless of when the money is paid, $2 million is among the five most expensive GAM-only trades in MLS history.
In addition to the allocation money – which is effectively extra salary-cap space – the Sounders will free up an international roster spot as well as a spot on the senior roster. With the winter transfer window closing tonight, the Sounders will likely hold off on filling those spots until the summer transfer window opens on July 13.
Still, losing Minoungou is not without risk. The winger has been one of the most dynamic dribblers in the league ever since he burst onto the scene in 2024. Last year he led all of MLS with 3.6 successful dribbles per game, was in the 97th percentile for expected assists per game (.36) and was in the 89th percentile for assists per game (.37). He had also started to show signs of improved finishing, having scored three goals with Burkina Faso while on international duty last year.
With the Sounders, though, his path toward regular playing time was complicated. He was already competing with Paul Rothrock and Paul Arriola for minutes and would likely be competing with Pedro de la Vega once he returns from injury. In Colorado, he likely faces a more clear path toward playing time.
