Down two goals leading into tonight, the Seattle Sounders returned home after eight games and over two months away from Lumen Field for the return leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup series on Wednesday night. The match started out a fervent pace, with the home team keeping most of the possession and even managing an early goal from Albert Rusnák in the opening quarter-hour. Seattle would continue to put their stamp on the match, attacking with intent and constantly winning second balls. Tigres would manage to grab an all-important away goal around the half-hour mark off through Henrique off a corner. Despite a classic Musovski finish and a Rusnák rocket, that away goal would turn out to be the Sounders' undoing as Tigres would advance to the next round after a 3-3 aggregate series.

Tigres never really had much of a foothold in the game. From the start, Seattle dominated the chance creation. First with a chance for Morris in the first few minutes, then with some Morris holdup play, a layoff to Cristian Roldan and a ball over the top to a crashing Rusnák for the go-ahead goal. They continued to set the tone, being physical and active in their re-press any time they lost the ball. Rothrock had a great chance on a near-open net that he couldn't quite square his feet for, and that would ultimately be followed up by Tigres' goal, where Juan Brunetta battled off a not-fully-committed Morris to give Tigres a major series advantage. Seattle tried to battle back in with several more chances — a Ferreira shot wide of the post, a hopeful (but on target) Morris backheel, and a Rothrock header off the post.

Danny Musovski entered the match for Snyder Brunell at halftime, instantly making an impact as to bring the series back within two goals of advancement with a classic striker's finish. It was the goalkeeper who did the most over the first 20 minutes of the second half to preserve the scoreline as he made a pair of vintage Stefan Frei saves, the best of which was on Correa's open header in the 66th minute.

Seattle would continue to tilt the gamestate more and more downhill as they brought in Paul Arriola for Kossa-Rienzi in the 71st, and just a minute later managed to create a chance for Rusnák, who squandered it by waiting, waiting, waiting to take a shot inside the box. Multiple possible handballs occurred, with VAR chalking them all off more quickly than expected. Musovski would then have a chance just a few minutes later after being played in by Jordan Morris, but was pushed into a hard collision with goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán by Juan Purata. The Sounder would be shown yellow for this cloudy incident. After a long spell of possession initially queued by a lung-busting defensive effort by Arriola and Ferreira two minutes earlier, Albert Rusnák would fire a cannon Djimi Traore would be proud of to bring the Sounders within a goal of advancement with eight minutes plus stoppage time to play.

The match degraded into end-to-end bursts as more subs were made — Vigón and Sánchez for Tigres, Dotson at right centerback for Seattle. Dotson proved useful quickly, snuffing out two bad giveaways by Cristian Roldan and Jackson Ragen in the final several minutes. The ref wasn't shy to bring out the cards at the end of the match — two for each team. Danny Musovski nearly had Seattle's final major chance three minutes into stoppage time as Cristian Roldan put yet another throughball into space for Paul Arriola, who crossed into the box and just a little too long for Musovski — managing to get a lunging touch, but not any control. Despite the aggregate 3-3 series scoreline, Tigres would ultimately limp to the next round off of Henrique's first half away goal.

Lineup

The Sounders kept things straightforward, opting to keep 10 of 11 starters from Leg 1 in place. The lone change came in the form of Jesus Ferreira, who replaced Paul Arriola in the lineup after much debate in the week leading up to Seattle's return to Lumen Field. Alex Roldan also got the nod yet again at centerback over Antino Lopez - likely with intention of going for a more offensive approach to reduce the 2 goal deficit early.

Key moments

3 - Chance! After a nice spell of possession, Alex Roldan sends a ball to Jesus, who one-times it up the line. Kalani Kossa-Rienzi puts it to Morris, who can't quite control it enough for a high-quality shot. The ball ends in Nahuel Guzmán's hands.

5 - Save! Correa gets Tigres' first chance off a weak shot inside the box. Frei is able to comfortably gather the ball.

11 - GOAL! Ragen puts a long ball to Morris, who holds up the ball and plays a short pass back to Cristian. Roldan puts a perfect ball over the top to an onrushing Rusnák who himself puts a beautiful shot into the net — only to be called back by the sideline ref for an offside. But with play stopped for Rothrock to get treatment to a bleeding mouth, VAR overrules the on field call and gives Rusnák his goal!

20 - Snyder and Jordan continue setting the tone with strong shoulders on and off the ball respectively. The crowd is loud and enjoying it; chants of Seattle! Sounders! echoing.

24 - Save! Brunetta fires a shot from the top of the 18, but Frei gets down to his right for the save.

25 - BIG CHANCE! Rusnák has a perfect ball to Kalani at the right edge of the box. A perfect cross-the-box pass to Rothrock nearly had the Sounders up 2-0, but he couldn't set his feet as the ball ends up over the net.

27 - Yellow card issued to Diego Lainez

31 - Goal. Tigres equalize off corner service by Juan Brunetta. Henrique battles off Morris who wasn't really up for a fight, scoring a bullet header into the right side of the net.

34 - Chance! Brunell makes an interior throughball to Kalani, who lays off for Ferreira. His shot is several feet wide of the far post.

36 - Chance! Guzmán fires a ball straight at Rusnák. He quickly dispatches the ball into the box to Morris, but his backheel attempt was smothered by Guzmán.

44 - CHANCE! Rusnák hits a ball into the box from the right to soaring Rothrock. His header hits the post and is pushed out for a corner.

46 - Subs for each team: Musovski in for Snyder, Purata for Lainez.

49 - GOAL! Alex Roldan hits a ball down the line for Morris who first-times the ball into the box. Musovski makes an instant impact, turning the ball into the net!

60 - Dangerous giveaway by Ferreira, but the Roldans manage to smother the attack and put the ball back to Frei.

61 - BIG SAVE! Frei keeps the Sounders in the match with a two-handed head height save at his near post, putting it out for a corner.

66 - EVEN BIGGER SAVE! Correa has a wide open header, but Stefan Frei has a perfect reaction save with his left hand to push the ball over the bar.

71 - Sub for Seattle: Arriola for Kossa-Rienzi.

72 - BIG CHANCES! Rusnák gets the ball inside the box and waits, waits, waits to get a shot off, spoiling an opportunity. Heavy sustained pressure in Tigres' box ends up resulting in multiple possible handballs — one on Angulo (reviewed by VAR and not called) during his challenge with Morris, and another just before the ball is cleared from the box.

76 - CHANCE! Musovski charges onto a ball in behind from Morris, gets pushed by Purata and then collides hard with Guzmán. Musovski receives a questionable yellow for his collision with the keeper.

80 - Arriola and Ferreira combine at the corner of the Sounders' own box to quell a counter, winning possession back.

82 - GOAL! After a long spell of possession, Albert Rusnák fires a cannon cross-field, hitting the far post and into the net!

90+6 - Yellow card to Sánchez for hacking down Rothrock.

Quick thoughts

Shades of Yesteryear: There were a whole lot of parallels to draw between the return leg of Seattle's series tonight and the fateful series against the same team 13 years ago. Down a two-goal deficit requiring a comeback, scoring three goals and getting a memorable screamer from outside the box - the only difference was that on this night, Seattle were unable to keep a clean sheet, meaning no advancement past their Mexican opponent.

Set Piece Setbacks: Seattle's set-piece woes struck again. After conceding a total of 12 goals from dead ball situations in 2025, a corner sequence was their undoing tonight. Henrique did well, battling off Jordan Morris to get free for his bullet header, but Morris seemed to only do a bit of pulling and not putting up much a fight on his end. Whether or not set pieces are a pattern the 2026 Sounders should be worrying about or if this was a one-off is a separate question - down several centerbacks on their depth chart, it could be posited that another big body in the lineup might have made for an improved setup, but still doesn't alleviate the individual mistake that cost Seattle a goal tonight.

Hair on Fire: I'm not just talking about how good Jesus Ferreira's flow looks (it looks good). Seattle came out and played with their hair on fire - and maintained that intensity throughout 90 minutes for the first time all season. As the speed increased, they grew into the game: more incisive passing, attacking with pace and clarity, and generally being a more physical presence on the field. Just about every player put in effort on both ends of the ball - none more so than Jesus Ferreira, who was found making lung-busting defensive actions deep into the second half and generally displayed creative prowess with his passing vision. If the team can manage to continue playing at or near this level for the foreseeable future, they'll make short work of their upcoming regular season homestand - and help fans shift their gaze from elimination in CCC towards Leagues Cup and the playoffs.

Notable quote

On what it takes after a result like [tonight's loss] to have a short memory and go on to focus on MLS on Saturday, Cristian Roldan said "Yeah, I think it's good that we have a, a short turnaround and not dwell on this too long, um, but I think there was a lot of positives and what we need to see out of ourselves on Saturday is um a more aggressive group that we saw for 90 minutes, that was pushing buttons, that was extremely intentional, direct, play in tight spaces at times so short turnaround is good when you don't have to dwell on things."

Player spotlight

Albert Rusnák: Though Stefan Frei and others put in worthy performances, Albert Rusnák's 2 goals were absolutely vital to breathing life back into the series. Though tonight's loss puts the Sounders' Champions Cup to sleep, it is safe to put the his early season slow start doubts to sleep along with it.
