World Cup 2026, Day 2: How and what to watch

Canada and the United States open their tournaments

If there were lessons from matchday one on the field, it's that the separation between hosts and minnows can be big and it's still hard to pull away with a blowout. The second on-field lesson is that everyone is still learning the referees.

Both Canada and the United States are opening their 2026 World Cup today. Canada against Bosnia-Herzegovina won't define the northerners' chance. They're favored by the data in every game. The United States, on the other hand, is in a group where every team has a strong chance to advance. The Yanks snagging a win over a Conmebol side (even the 6th place one) would go a long way toward giving them some comfort.

Today's games

Canada vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina

Time: Noon (Pacific)
Where: BMO Field, Toronto, Ontario
TV: Fox, Telemundo
Online: Fox One, Peacock

USA vs. Paraguay

Time: 6 PM (Pacific)
Where: SoFi Stadium, Inglewood (LA), California
TV: Fox, Telemundo
Online: Tubi, Fox One, Peacock

What’s interesting today?

  • Avoid commercials during the hydration breaks by watching Telemundo in Spanish. Fox won't use the pause to give you any insight into the match.
  • Tune in early if you want the pomp and circumstance from the two opening ceremonies. Mexico's was wonderful. Expect pageantry worth watching, although Fox may not show the Canadians (they skipped much of Mexico).
  • Alphonso Davies, Ali Ahmed, Jacob Shaffelburg, and Alfie Jones are all coming back from injuries. Each should see limited time during the group stage. Star defender Bombito withdrew from the tournament. This puts Concacaf's emergent challengers to the US-Mex duo at a disadvantage while they are on home territory.
  • Chris Richards is healthy for selection by the United States. The Stars and Stripes poor defense may take solace that they open against a weak offense in Paraguay. This team has to go "all gas, no breaks" to go far. Cristian Roldan is one of four DM/CM types, but the coach might play widebacks in that slot, which could explain the 13 defenders.

Sounder at Heart is hosting a watch party at Project 9 Brewing during the US match. We’ll have copies of IV: The Sounder at Heart Magazine available.
