The 2026 Men’s World Cup officially kicks off today when Mexico hosts South Africa. Interestingly enough, it’s a rematch of the 2010 World Cup opener when South Africa hosted Mexico, the first time two teams have faced off in two different World Cup openers. Mexico also becomes the first nation to host three World Cups, having previously done so in 1970 and 1986.

What’s interesting today?
- Mexico will be of particular interest to Sounders fans as Obed Vargas earned a spot on the El Trí roster. He’s actually one of two Mexico players who came through the MLS academy system, joining Brian Gutierrez, who played for the Chicago Fire before moving to Chivas last year.
- Both are part of a group of Mexican youngsters who could be the future of the program, the most notable of whom is 17-year-old Gilberto Mora. The No. 10 isn’t just the youngest player in the tournament, he’s also expected to play a significant role for El Trí.
- In the other game, LAFC's Son Heung-min is playing in his fourth World Cup. He’s currently tied for South Korea's all-time World Cup scoring lead with three goals.
