The Seattle Sounders organization has its first summer transfer rumor of the summer window, but it is for the second team Tacoma Defiance.
Originally reported by Kevin Jiménez, Jared Ríos, a 21-year-old Costa Rican defensive midfielder who is currently a member of AD Municipal Liberia will be joining Tacoma Defiance. This move is rumored to happen after the Central American games which are scheduled from July 24 to Aug. 8.
Ríos started to earn more playing time during the 2025/2026 Clausura, appearing in 8 of the team's 18 games, helping the team finish 3rd in the Clausura table. He also featured twice in the Clausura playoff.
While Municipal Liberia had a successful season on the pitch, the potential acquisition of Ríos seems to be triggered by the apparent loss of a first-division participation license.
Regardless of the manner of his availability, Ríos would fill a needed player profile on the Defiance roster. The central midfield developmental pipeline has been depleted with the transfers of Josh Atencio, Danny Leyva and Obed Vargas as well as the promotion of Snyder Brunell and Peter Kingston.
The team has attempted to fill this void with the preseason signing of Xavi Gnaulati and moving fellow first-year Defiance player, Mark O'Neill, to center mid. However, both are playing out of position with Gnaulati historically playing in an attacking role and O'Neill normally a pure defender.
If this signing comes to fruition, it will be a feather in the hat of the Sounders developmental philosophy with Defiance. According to Jiménez report, Ríos is turning down an offer from Costa Rican powerhouse Herediano in favor of moving to Tacoma. It seems probable that the viable pathway the club has created to the first team is a significant factor as the player decides the best next step for his career.
