Seattle controlled Sunday's Cascadia Clash from start to finish, riding first-half goals from Ryanne Brown and Maddie Mercado to a 2-0 win at Lumen Field.

The Reign returned home for the 45th edition of the Cascadia Clash before a crowd of 14,793, and they never trailed. Brown opened the scoring in the eighth minute, running onto a pass from Ainsley McCammon and blasting it past Mackenzie Arnold from the top of the box. Portland pushed back and tested Cassie Miller, who made five first-half saves, but Seattle doubled its lead just before the break when Sam Meza won the ball back in midfield and crossed to Mercado at the far post for her third goal of the season.

The second half stayed scoreless as both sides traded chances — Pietra Tordin rattled the post and forced a save off the line from Mia Fishel — but the Reign defense held firm behind another strong performance from Miller, who finished with nine saves and a clean sheet in her second straight start in place of the injured Claudia Dickey. The result pulls Seattle within three points of the playoff line.

The Reign (5-6-2) now head on a three-game road trip. Their first of the three away matches is Saturday, July 18, against Gotham FC (7-3-3). That match kicks off at 9 a.m. PT and will air on ABC.

Quotes

Laura Harvey

On the team's performance across both halves:

"I thought we played really well in the first half, and then we showed our mentality, grit, determination, willingness to not get beat in the second half, which has been something we've been talking about wanting to get better at. It was probably the closest to the best 90-minute performance that I can remember since Orlando, maybe. Really, really proud of the group."

On Sam Meza's tackle-turned-assist:

"I spoke to Sam before the game, and I said to her — one of the things we've been working on, me and her, has been getting the ball off her feet quick, whether that's dribbling, passing, or making a quick decision. That was a really good example of that. I actually brought up the tackle at halftime and said that's stuff that can trigger us into action — and it triggered us into scoring a goal. For that cross, she gets off her feet quick, delivers quick, and Maddie's set up for it. We all know how good she is defensively — she's phenomenal. But if she can add these little layers to her game, there's no stopping her."

On Cassie Miller's performance in place of the injured Claudia Dickey:

"When someone goes through a long-term injury like Cassie — like Ryanne, there's a few — you're just waiting for that moment for them, hoping it's a moment where they can really get praised. I thought Cassie played really well last week, but it's hard to praise somebody when you've conceded three goals. She didn't have to do amazing things until the second half, but that save she makes to tip it onto the post off Pietra Tordin is a great save — and she's just calm in those moments. I always think backup goalkeepers are so important to your roster. They've got to be willing to accept what their role is, and accept that they could be called upon at any time. I think she has the ability to be a number one for sure."

On weathering a stretch of heavy Portland pressure in the second half:

"We'd spoken all week — honestly, all summer, but really after last week's game — about how there are moments in games where you're going to get tired, get fatigued, and the other team has momentum. Don't get beat. Let things go wide, make it have to be a cross instead of a shot. That was a huge shift from last week — the amount of times the front four were broken and got back behind the ball. That's not tactical, that's in your heart. And out of the front four, I think Mia was the only one who lasted 90, which is a reflection of the work they all put in. When we got broken, they weren't willing to let that be the last time — they were going to get back and try to solve it."

On what a result like this can mean going forward:

"I want this to be our standard. I'm not willing now to let our standards drop, because it's hard to keep saying we know we can do it and we're not doing it. We've shown today we can do it — we can put a shift in defensively, we don't have to press an opponent, we can play out of pressure, we can play in behind an opponent and get opportunities doing that. So the challenge is I'm not going to accept anything less than that now, and they can't for themselves. It doesn't mean we're going to get the result every week, but it means we can look ourselves in the mirror after every game and say that was the standard we set for ourselves at home against Portland, and we're committing to that standard now no matter what. That will be my message to the group going into Gotham — I don't want to see anything less than that ever, because you owe it to yourself to put that on the field."

On Ryanne Brown scoring her first NWSL goal after a lengthy ACL rehab:

"Just so happy. Not only has she been through the rehab and come back, but then to not be getting a ton of minutes — that takes a lot mentally to stay in it. She's a brilliant teammate. She always wants to develop for herself, and she's willing to do anything for the team. Those types of players are priceless, and I think she gets the credit and the accolades that she deserves. If it's not goal of the week, then I don't know football."

Cassie Miller and Ryanne Brown

On scoring the game-winner in her first extended NWSL action since her ACL injury:

Brown: "I mean, always go for the shot — always go. I'm feeling really good. I feel like coming into it there was obviously some nerves, but I felt extremely encouraged by my teammates, by my friends, my family, and that just kind of helped throughout the whole game. So I'm really happy that we were able to pull it out with a win and a shutout."

On the defensive effort behind the clean sheet:

Miller: "I think this week in particular we were really focused on that. I think some games in the past we've been getting broken down, and I think a big focus was defensively — how can we be sturdy, how can we be strong, how do we get that clean shape? And honestly, kudos to Ryanne — she's been balling in practices this whole year. So for her to step in — yeah, she might be nervous, but she was prepared, she was ready. The rest of our back line, they were strong, they were a wall. And we were able to find a way, and sometimes it's ugly. It wasn't the whole game — I thought we looked good, honestly. And we came out with the win."

Brown, on Miller's return from injury: "Me and Cassie have kind of been in similar situations coming back from injury, and I see all the work she's put in to get to this moment. So it's really cool to see that pay off. She made some huge saves for us, kept us with the lead, with the shutout. Her performance kind of speaks for itself."

On Sam Meza's tackle and assist on the second goal:

Miller: "Sam — thank God she's on our team. She gets stuck in all the time. She's our unsung hero, genuinely. She does that game in and game out, and she's consistent with it. So thank goodness for her — the rest of our midfield too. Ains, Sally, everyone that came in, they were getting in tackles, and that's what we needed today. She got into those tackles, she hit such an incredible ball. Maddie's header was phenomenal too. Such a good team goal, that."

Brown: "I honestly don't think Sam gets enough credit. She's a workhorse in there, and she's picking off balls left and right — and those two slide tackles that led to the goal, it was crazy. I almost blacked out watching it. She's huge for us, and I'm glad she was able to get an assist out there."

On the emphasis on getting more numbers forward this season:

Brown: "Laura has definitely been emphasizing us getting — as much as we defend, pour that same effort into getting up and into the attack and trying to score goals. That's kind of something that I try to do when I see us turning and going forward — trying to get into the attack whenever I can."

On the rivalry with Portland:

Brown: "You guys know how we feel about Portland — this is always a huge game for us, especially at home. The way that we could get a win and a shutout, I think it speaks volumes. This is huge for us, for our momentum going into the second half of the season. It was a really big win for us."
