Seattle Reign FC returned to Lumen Field for their first match at home since the men's World Cup break and just their fourth at the stadium this season. The 45th edition of the Cascadia Clash kicked off in front of 14,793 fans, the fourth-largest standalone home crowd ever to watch the Reign, and Seattle were in control from the opening whistle.
Defender Ryanne Brown scored her first NWSL goal in the eighth minute, meeting a brilliant line-breaking pass from Ainsley McCammon and blasting it past McKenzie Arnold from the top of the box.

Portland responded by refocusing its attack, but the Reign held firm with composed, purposeful clearances. Pietra Tordin and Ryanne Brown collided in the box during a Thorns attack, but VAR quickly confirmed the on-field decision that there was no penalty. Seattle survived the early pressure with five first-half saves from Cassie Miller. They then broke through Portland’s mid-block by forcing turnovers, driving wide, putting numbers forward, and testing Arnold from distance. The effort paid off a second time when Sam Meza carved a smooth double tackle through Portland’s midfield and delivered a pass to Maddie Mercado at the far post, which she slotted home for Seattle’s second goal.

There were no goals in the second half as both sides continued to trade chances and make stops. Tordin came closest for Portland, hitting one shot off the post and swinging in another that forced a save off the line by Mia Fishel. Fishel had a few chances herself at the other end, but none with enough weight to earn her first goal with the Reign.
WHAT WORKED: DEFENSE
This was a game of shapes on both ends of the pitch, and Seattle consistently trapped and exploited Portland in their own scheme. Playing into the opponent’s compact shape by layering numbers in tight allowed the Reign to absorb a high volume of shots and reduce the quality of chances. Goalkeeper Cassie Miller, making her second consecutive start in place of the injured Claudia Dickey, had an excellent game with nine saves and a clean sheet. There was a controlled urgency to Seattle’s clearances, setting up a smooth defense-to-offense pipeline that neutralized Portland’s goal-scoring machine.
WHAT WORKED: OFFENSE
The Reign’s attack was fueled by its defense, turning threats into opportunities in transition. Is this goodbye to the frustrating, stagnant Reign attack that has characterized the club’s woes for a few seasons? What we saw today was a creative breakaway offense built on line-breaking passes, midfield interceptions, and forcing Portland to abandon their mid block and chase. Playing long and wide proved effective early, forcing the Thorns’ defense to open up space in the final third. The Reign committed numbers forward, found shooting lanes, and capitalized on opportunities by beating Portland into the box and creating one-on-one chances against Arnold.
Postgame quotes
“Laura has definitely been emphasizing that as much as we defend, to pour that same effort into getting up and into the attack and trying to score goals. That's something that I try to do when I see us turning and going forward, is trying to get into the attack whenever I can.” - Defender and goal scorer Ryanne Brown
“ I thought we played really well in the first half, and then we showed our mentality, grit, determination, willingness to not get beat in the second half, which has been something we’ve been talking about wanting to get better at. It was probably the closest to the best 90-minute performance that I can remember since Orlando, maybe.” - Head Coach Laura Harvey
“I honestly don’t think Sam [Meza] gets enough credit. She’s a workhorse in there, she’s picking off balls left and right.” - Brown
“Thank goodness for [Meza], she’s our unsung hero. The rest of the midfield, too – Ains [Ainsley McCammon], Sally [Menti] – they were getting tackles and that’s what we needed today.” - Goalkeeper Cassie Miller
The Reign will look to carry momentum from today's win into a challenging three-match roadtrip, beginning Saturday, July 18, against reigning champions Gotham FC. Kickoff is set for 9 AM PT on ABC.
