Cody Baker has been traded to the New England Revolution, according to reporting by Sounder at Heart’s Niko Moreno. It was not immediately clear what the Sounders would be receiving in the move.
The Issaquah native first signed a Homegrown Player contract with the Sounders in 2023, shortly after he burst onto the scene with some strong performances while on short-term loan in the U.S. Open Cup and in MLS play. He ended up logging nearly 900 first-team minutes and 10 starts that year as a 19-year-old, showing off versatility to play either fullback position.
His playing time diminished a bit in 2024 when he played about 650 minutes across all competitions, but he still seemed to have a distinct role to play. But he only made one start in 2025, and logged just 117 minutes before going on loan to the USL Championship's Sacramento Republic.
This year seemed to be going a little better, as he was close to equalling last year's playing time total and looked good in his one start; he went 90 minutes in the Sounders’ 1–0 road win over the San Jose Earthquakes and would have scored a goal if not for Albert Rusnák being in an offside position.
Although Baker didn’t seem to have a clear role in head coach Brian Schmetzer's rotation, his departure does leave the Sounders seemingly a bit short-handed at left back. Based on our depth chart, the players behind Nouhou are now mostly wing backs. It’s possible that Tino Lopez could play there, but that's not a position where he has much experience. It is, of course, also possible that the Sounders have plans to acquire someone who plays left back.
