Where to watch
With this being the July Fourth weekend, the usual public viewing spots are not all open. With that in mind, we looked into a few of the popular spots to see who’s operating:
Open
- Victory Hall – Across the street from T-Mobile Park, fully operational restaurant and bar
- Seattle Center Armory – You’re basically inside the campus’ food court, lots of food, bathrooms, and usually a good crowd
- Mural Ampitheater – The outdoor space right outside the Armory
- Pier 62/Sounder Barge – Made a late change to open both options, but be aware that Pier 62 requires a reservation that doesn't guarantee entry, while the Barge requires a paid ticket but does guarantee entry
- Fonté Bar in Rainier Square – Kind of a secret spot but they have a big screen and it has gotten good reviews from folks on Instagram
- Fast Fashion – The SoDo brewery is family friendly, has food and is always a good spot to watch a game
- Project 9 Brewing – The Maple Leaf brewery is also family-friendly, has food and usually has a pretty chill but attentive crowd
- KEXP Gathering Space – Inside and good coffee, but note that they’ll only be showing the Norway-Brazil game
- Legacy Square – The Renton park space will be showing the Mexico game and has been a very popular gathering spot
Not open
- Pacific Place's Soccer House is closed
- Occidental's Brick Park is also closed
- Westlake Park is not scheduled to be open
What’s interesting today?
- Norway had not qualified for the World Cup since 1998 when they advanced to the Round of 16, but were a popular darkhorse pick in this tournament because of the top-end talent. Headlining that list of players is Erling Haaland, who has five goals in his first four World Cup games and now has 60 goals in just 53 senior national team caps.
- Brazil are the most decorated World Cup program with five titles, but their last one was in 2002. Since then, their best showing was making it to the 2014 semifinals when they actually lost the third-place game.
- Perhaps England's most famous defeat came at Estadio Azteca, when Diego Maradona scored the "hand of god" goal that led Argetina to the 1986 World Cup title over the Three Lions.
- Mexico have so far been one of the tournament's top teams with four wins in four games and outscoring opponents 8–0. They have only lost 2 of 89 competitive games at Azteca in the stadium's storied history and are currently riding a 26-match unbeaten run there.
