What’s interesting today?

  • Canada is fresh off their first-ever knockout match victory – a win over South Africa – and will now play their first-ever Round of 16 match at the World Cup.
  • Alphonso Davies has only been able to play 16 minutes in the tournament so far and will almost surely only be available off the bench again. It remains unclear how much playing time he’ll be able to see.
  • Morocco is coming off a shootout win over Netherlands in the Round of 32 and are now riding a 32-match unbeaten run. Since losing the third-place game at the 2022 World Cup, they’ve only registered three losses.
  • Paraguay are playing in their first World Cup since 2010 when they made the quarterfinals. They are coming off a shootout win over Germany in the Round of 32.
  • France have so far been arguably the most dominant team in the tournament, having outscored their opponents 13–2 in the first four games.
  • Kylian Mbappe is currently second all-time in World Cup scoring with 18 goals, two behind Lionel Messi. He also is second in this tournament's Golden Boot race with six goals.
