Seattle Reign went on the road to face the Kansas City Current on Saturday evening, a team that hadn't lost at home in 26 straight games. The Reign were entering with tired legs, having played a midweek road match against Racing Louisville, while the Current were fully rested.

The Reign forced an own goal early before conceding a penalty just as the second half began. Kansas City put on the pressure, but the Reign held firm and walked away with a 1-1 draw.

The Reign (8-8-4) return home on Sunday, August 30, where they will host the Houston Dash (7-8-5, with a match still to play on Sunday, August 23). That match kicks off at 4 p.m. PT and will stream on NWSL+.

Quotes

Laura Harvey

On defending well and getting a point on the road in Kansas City:

"I've been to Kansas a lot. Since I came back to the Reign, I don't think we've ever got a point here, and we knew coming here is really difficult. I thought in the first 20 minutes we played really well — obviously got the goal in that period, then they started to get back into it. Mia [Fishel] is devastated about the penalty, I think it's harsh — I'm not sure she means it, but it's fine, whatever. I said to the girls at the end, I thought there's been moments this season and last season where some of our inexperience has shown, and I thought tonight we looked like an experienced team at times when the going got tough. That's something we can build on. If you'd have said to me before the game started, would you take a point on the road in Kansas — probably. We're slightly disappointed just in how the goal was given up, and obviously the fact that we didn't get any points in Louisville. But now we can refresh, get back to Seattle, recover and get ready for a really big game next week."

On Kansas City taking control of the game for large stretches:

"I just thought we were a little bit passive and a bit indecisive defensively. When we're like that, you can give Croix [Bethune] and Debinha half a yard, and they're the types of players that are going to punish you in those moments. But again, when we did that, we worked really hard to try and solve it. I think there are solutions we can put together to help the players make a little bit different decisions in those moments."

On the chaos created by dangerous balls into the box on the goal, off a Kansas City error:

"The ball in by Sof [Huerta] was world class, and it's just going to cause people problems. That's a bit of the bit we can reflect on — we spoke about it at the end of the game, that we didn't show enough quality in the little glimpses of moments when we could have. Kansas were on the front foot and there was a lot of space behind them, and for me, we could have just put it into space and let Maddie Dahlien, Mia and [Maddie] Mercado run — we didn't do that enough. But when we did, we caused some problems. That's just a little learning lesson for us. It was similar against Louisville — we've just got to realize what's working for us and keep doing it, and show a little bit of quality when we're trying to do it."

On targeting Kansas City's set-piece vulnerability:

"We talk a lot about data — if it becomes a trend, that's obviously a trend. We scored on a set piece when we played them at home too, so we know it's an area we could hurt them in. We didn't have a lot of time to prepare and train it, but we got the details figured out, knew if they did certain things we could potentially play short, and we got that opportunity, which was great."

On Emily Mason's late block:

"Big. Honestly, we decided we were putting Mason and Ruby Hladek on way before we put them on, and then we started to get a bit of momentum and were actually going to go into a back five — and then the way the game was, I thought, no, let's just keep pushing. So we put Mason in the back four and let her do her stuff. We've seen that multiple times from Mason over the last two years — she just has an ability to defend in key moments, which she did, which was great."

On the team's discipline and yellow cards disrupting the flow of the game:

"I thought in the first half we didn't compete well enough, and I said to the players at halftime — the amount of times our players were pushed off the ball, Kansas picked it up, threw it back in, and we just allowed those things to happen. In the second half we came out and said we weren't going to let that happen anymore — we were here to compete, here to put a shift in, and here to make it as difficult as possible. Do I think some of the yellows were harsh? Yeah. Do I think some of the things they did deserved yellows that didn't happen? Yeah. But I want a team that's willing to compete in the right way, win their duels, win their battles aerially, and I thought they did that, and that's all I can ask for them. When you get a booking, all you've got to do is be mindful that you're on it and try to manage the game as best you can."

Phoebe McClernon and Claudia Dickey

On not conceding a goal in the run of play despite facing 23 shots:

McClernon: "We would have liked to have been able to control the tempo of that game a little bit more, so while that is definitely a positive takeaway, I think they still had a lot of chances, and we would ideally have executed our game plan a little bit better and a little bit more frequently. But we came off a midweek game and we're coming out of Kansas City with a point, and I don't think that's anything to take lightly — I think that's really big for us."

Dickey: "They had 23 shots. I think we did such a great job making sure — obviously they hit the crossbar twice, the post once, but I wasn't making saves, we were blocking shots. Shots were going over. For such a great offensive team, and how many goals they've scored this year, what a threat they are — for us to basically have two shots on target against and not give up a goal in the run of play, I think is a great credit to how much we've progressed this year, even after Wednesday. There were things we wish we had done better in the game, but to come here and get a point is better than nothing."

On the team's fitness and work ethic in a three-game week:

Dickey: "It was hot for me, which is saying a lot. To play Louisville midweek in August, then play Kansas City in August after being in Seattle when it's 70 degrees every single day we train — I think the fact that we can hang in these games, we had a three-game week where it was over 85 degrees both games, and we didn't have to make subs until the 60th minute — I think it's a credit to how much work people are putting in. Obviously we're going to be tired, it's a three-game week, but the performance out there, everybody's sprinting. Phoebe's cramping at the 98th minute because she has to run up and down the field 100 times, and she's still going. I think our work ethic as a team, as a backline, keeps us in games, and they don't get enough credit for that. Everybody's collapsing in front of me and I never even have to touch the ball — it's so fun to watch because of how hard they're working."

On Emily Mason's late block:

Dickey: "It was huge. The one thing you don't want ever is to see Croix running at you 2v2, and I think we did such a good job limiting that tonight. For Mason to come in and make that block — full field sprint — it's just a credit to everyone. Everybody's sprinting as much as they can. I think her coming in and making that block, we all can't wait to watch it back, because the way she fell back, it was insane — I've never seen a body fold like that. They make me look good, I don't have to do anything. No matter who comes on, I think it's so fluid, and we want it so bad — coming here it's so difficult, and knowing what we have to do, we put our bodies on the line."

On scoring off a set piece against a Kansas City team that has struggled defending them:

McClernon: "In the last few games we've created a lot of dangerous opportunities from set pieces, so yeah, there was some talk about Kansas City's vulnerability there. But there's also just a pride point for us — we want to be converting on set pieces. If you win the set-piece battle in games, more often than not you're going to come out the victor, and that's definitely an area of growth we want to hone in on and become more lethal at. We also worked on it a lot because we were frustrated with Wednesday — we should have had multiple goals on corner kicks against Louisville. So coming in today, that was one of the main points of emphasis from the review. These are basically free chances."
