Sounders vs. Whitecaps: Gamethread

Sounders will host the Whitecaps at 7:40 PM PT on AppleTV.

The Seattle Sounders successfully ended their all-competition losing streak, but will still enter tonight's game against the Vancouver Whitecaps trying to win in league play for the first time since May 13.

For better or worse, the Whitecaps won’t come in playing particularly well, either. The Whitecaps’ last win in league play came back on May 23 and they were the only MLS team to finish Leagues Cup play without a win of any kind. The Whitecaps enter this match 0–3–4 in their last seven across all competitions.

A big problem for both teams has been health. The Sounders are still missing several key components, with a likely season-ending injury for Pedro de la Vega being the latest to crop up. The Whitecaps are missing seven players of their own, most notably forward Brian White.

The recent slide has dropped the Whitecaps from atop the Western Conference standings, where they now trail the Houston Dynamo by one point, albeit with two games in hand. The Sounders enter today's match day out of a playoff spot for this first time this year, currently sitting 11th in the table, one point behind Minnesota United in ninth and also possessing two games in hand.

Notes

  • The Whitecaps can clinch a record ninth Cascadia Cup if they claim a point in tonight's game, thanks to a pair of wins over the Portland Timbers earlier this year.
  • Although this is the first league meeting between these teams this season, the Sounders beat the Whitecaps in both Concacaf Champions Cup games earlier this year. Neither of those games were played at Lumen Field.
  • Today is the Sounders’ annual Pride match.
