The Seattle Sounders’ defense of their Leagues Cup title ended a little early. Facing exceptionally long odds to advance heading into their final match of Phase One, the Sounders grabbed an early lead but couldn’t hold on as Chivas de Guadalajara dominated the second half and won 2–1 on Wednesday.
Knowing that advancement was a long shot, Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer opted to go with a heavily rotated lineup that featured four players on loan from Tacoma Defiance and just two ostensible regulars. Chivas, who had already been eliminated, countered with a lineup that was considerably less rotated and featured several normal starters.
Despite that imbalance, the Sounders still managed to grab an early lead when Gallatin Sandnes — one of those loanees — put away a ball that had been headed back across goal by Tino Lopez in the 13th minute.
The Sounders actually came close to building on their lead when Osaze De Rosario was played behind the Chivas defense off a header by Tino Lopez, but his shot was saved.
Thanks to some quality saves by Stefan Frei, the Sounders were able to take that lead into halftime.
The second half, though, was all Chivas and they finally broke through in the 61st minute when Luis Rey sized up a chance from about 14 yards out and laced a left-footed shot inside the near post.
Chivas then took the lead in the 72nd minute when Luis Romo played a gorgeous ball over the defense that allowed Santiago Sandoval to head it past Frei.
The Sounders did get a couple decent looks at an equalizer despite having just 20% of possession in the second half. The best of them came when Stuart Hawkins made a remarkable run from his own penalty area, received a pass from Paul Rothrock and played a gorgeous trivela pass directly into the path of De Rosario, who seemed to be in on goal. But the defender was able to put De Rosario off just enough that he was not able to connect on the shot.
Lineups
The Sounders make nine changes to their lineup after beating Querétaro on the weekend, with Sebastian Gomez and Stefan Frei the only holdovers. The lineup also features four players on loan from Tacoma Defiance with Edson Carli, Mark O'Neill, Charlie Gaffney and Gallatin Sandnes all making their first Sounders starts. The oldest outfield player is Ryan Sailor, 27, who is also making his first Sounders start.

64’ — Offside! Chivas seems to have the go-ahead goal when Rey heads in a rebound but he was offside on the initial shot.
72’ — Goal! Just moments after entering the match Santiago Sandoval gets free for a header off a Luis Romo pass. Chivas, 2–1.
78’ — Chance! Stuart Hawkins bends a ball toward De Rosario, who seems to have a beat on it, but he’s thrown off just enough by the defender that he’s not able to connect.
79’ — Chance! Paul Rothrock puts a dangerous ball through the ball. De Rosario is able to get a touch but he shoots wide.
Quick thoughts
Fighting spirit: Despite a relatively inexperienced lineup, the Sounders didn’t look remotely overwhelmed, at least not during the first half. The energy was clearly there and the group seemed to believe that they could actually pull off the win. Now, that faded in the second half but head coach Brian Schmetzer was effusive in his praise and even said he hoped some of the normal starters saw that effort.
Goalkeeper controversy?: Andrew Thomas has ranged from exceptional the solid during most of his appearances, but Stefan Frei was outstanding throughout the Leagues Cup. Schmetzer stopped short of saying there’s an actual controversy, but he did reiterate that he feels he has two starters and that there’s an open competition. Either way, Frei showed that he’s still capable of making big saves when called upon.
Now comes the big test: Despite picking up a win in Leagues Cup play, the Sounders will still carry a six-game league losing streak into Sunday's game against the Vancouver Whitecaps. If they are to avoid making that a seven-game losing streak, they’ll need to combine the energy they showed in this game with the higher-end quality that they’ve previously shown themselves capable of.

Player spotlight
Charlie Gaffney is not someone who has gotten a ton of attention and didn’t even make our recent list of the top Sounders prospects, but he played with the kind of energy that Schmetzer absolutely loves. It would not be at all surprising if this is not the last we see of him.
