The Seattle Sounders made it four-straight wins by beating the New England Revolution 3–0 on Saturday night. Goals from Hassani Dotson (15’), Dejan Joveljić (74’), and Paul Arriola (81’) paired with a standout performance from Andrew Thomas to earn the shutout victory to run their unbeaten streak to nine games.
The Sounders may have been somewhat lucky to take their 1-0 lead into halftime following Dotson’s goal, as New England led by virtually every statistical measure except for the one that matters most. The Revolution had outshot the Sounders 7-3, had the Expected Goals edge of 0.36 to 0.16 according to Fotmob, had put 3 shots on target to Seattle’s 1, and had more touches in the box, more shots from inside the box, and just generally looked like the more dangerous side during the opening 45 minutes.
Both sides exchanged shots before Dotson opened the game up in the 15th minute. The chance came from a tussle for the ball between Sebastian Gomez and Luca Langoni which Gomez eventually lost, but the result was a loose ball that Dotson picked up and immediately made his way towards goal. Coming from the left side toward the middle, he picked out his spot from about 20 yards out and hit a hard, low shot to the far post that Matt Turner dove for but couldn’t keep out of his goal.
Seattle had a couple of good opportunities following their goal, but it was New England who created the most danger. No Revolution chance was bigger than a look in the 4th minute of first-half stoppage time when an initial ball into the box was deflected off of Gomez and eventually reached Peyton Miller at the back post but Thomas was able to stay big and block the shot and actually earn a corner as the blocked shot came off of Miller on the way out to give Seattle a goal kick.
Coming out of halftime the Sounders looked revitalized and were ready to push to increase their lead. Seattle repeatedly looked to play over the top to utilize Jordan Morris’ speed to open up the Revolution. New England weren’t without a threat of their own, as Miller continued to be dangerous on the wing. In the 67th minute, having switched from the left wing to the right, he cut inside for a good look at goal but Thomas did well to move to his right and was able to catch and hold onto the shot.
Seattle responded to that threat first with a combination between substitute Paul Arriola and Dejan Joveljić that proved to be a bit of foreshadowing. In the 70th minute, Arriola cut a ball back from the left side of the box to Joveljić, but his shot was handled easily by Matt Turner despite good contact.
That foreshadowing didn’t take long to pay off as Joveljić got his goal in the 74th minute. Snyder Brunell played a good ball to Albert Rusnák down the right channel, Rusnák played it across to Arriola at the top of the box and then he completed the movement, finding Joveljić as he ran in on the left side of the box. Joveljić controlled the ball then lifted a curling shot over a pair of onrushing defenders and into the far corner to make it 2–0.
The Sounders made a pair of subs in the 80th minute with the win seeming firmly in their grasp, bringing on Jesús Ferreira for his first appearance since his injury in the game against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Aug. 16. Just a minute later he marked his return from injury with a fantastic play, running onto a ball from Rusnák before playing a cross around a defender and in front of a couple others for Arriola to collect and slot past Turner to make it 3–0 in the 81st minute.
There was some hustle and bustle over the following 15 minutes, but the score stayed as it was and the Sounders secured their first road win since April 4, getting their 100th-ever MLS road win on their ninth attempt. They’ll be back in action against FC Dallas on Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
Lineups
Brian Schmetzer makes four changes from the lineup that started against Sporting Kansas City, most notably with Dejan Joveljić replacing Danny Musovski up top and Yeimar Gomez Andrade getting his first start since March 7 in place of Stuart Hawkins. Sebastian Gomez starts on the left wing over Paul Arriola, Hassani Dotson returns from suspension for yellow card accumulation in midfield in place of Peter Kingston. As a side note, Ryan Sailor is not in the match day squad but was included on the graphic.

Quick thoughts
Depth delivers: The Sounders have been touted for their depth for a while now, and during the dire days of this summer it was hard to put much value in that depth. Now that more of the players from higher up the roster are back on the field and having an impact, the breadth and wealth of talent in the squad is paying dividends. Yeimar made his first start in 7 months, and when he hit his minutes limit Stuart Hawkins replaced him and showed the same the quality he’d demonstrated as a starter in recent performances. Likewise, Ferreira returned from injury replacing Joveljić, and immediately set up fellow substitute Arriola for a goal to give him a goal and an assist. Snyder Brunell and Kalani Kossa-Rienzi have both been starters at times this season, and both showed well as substitutes, Jordan Morris continues to look good as a starter and while Sebastian Gomez didn’t have the impact he’s had in other games he was still dangerous on the wing. With players getting healthy and finding form, the Sounders could be a real problem down the stretch and into the playoffs.
On a run: The Sounders have four consecutive wins for the first time this season, and are unbeaten in nine for the second time. Although that previous nine-game run saw them go 6–0–3, considering the turnaround they’ve managed during this particular run it may be even more impressive. The Sounders now find themselves still in 7th place in the West, but they’ve opened up an eight-point gap between themselves with 41 points and the Portland Timbers in 10th on 33 points. There’s still plenty of road ahead, but the win tonight suggests they can a result just about anywhere they head from here on out.
Lower salary, still a big impact: Albert Rusnák has been a point of contention among Seattle fans for a while, but he’s always managed to find a way to make an impact for the team. Part of that has been the weight of his Designated Player contract, but since agreeing to a new contract to open up space to add Joveljić, he’s had a goal and seven assists in 8 games. In fact, he’s now tied for the league lead with 14 assists. Adding talent, getting other players healthy, and increasing the threat around him has only made Rusnák even more impactful. He won’t be able to play forever, and as he ages the gaps in his game will surely show more, but it’s hard to imagine that his qualities won’t continue to be of great value.
Notable quote
Brian Schmetzer on the win: “We came into their building, and it wasn't just a smash and grab. It wasn't like ‘oh we got fortunate.’ We outplayed them. That's a good team, well coached team. We came in here, did what we wanted to do, had to suffer.”
Player spotlight
Paul Arriola’s been on a good run of form lately, and his goal and assist off the bench tonight give him 3 goals and 3 assists in the last 6 games.
