The Seattle Sounders suffered an embarrassing 5–1 defeat on the road against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday, and may have lost control of their playoff destiny along with it. A 62nd minute goal from Jordan Morris provided little consolation as their Cascadia rivals stacked up a brace from Brian White (1’, 53’) along with goals from Ryan Gauld (9’), Mathias Laborda (43’), and Aleksa Cvetkovic (70’).

This result matched the Sounders’ worst of the season, another 5–1 loss to a Cascadia club when they lost at home to the Portland Timbers. Seattle have now been swept in the Cascadia Cup, failing to claim a single point against their historic rivals. It’s the first time in the history of the Cascadia Cup that a team failed to grab even a point (Note: The Whitecaps also failed to claim a point in 2020, but the Cascadia Cup council did not award the trophy that year.)

Things started incredibly badly with a first-minute goal for Brian White. Kalani Kossa-Rienzi tried to make a play on the ball as Bruno Caicedo went 1-v-1 against him, and although he got a touch to the ball he neither won possession nor slowed the winger down, and as Caicedo went past he sent in a cross that caught Jackson Ragen too far inside to challenge White and Nouhou was on the backside of the striker and couldn’t really contest the header as it went into the back of the net. Things got worse quickly when Vancouver doubled their lead in the 10th minute, this time from the opposite wing. Nouhou arguably started his contest with Edier Ocampo from a losing position and never really got into a position to compete as he attempted a lunge to try to win possession rather than knock the ball away as Ocampo drove past and found Gauld with a cross. Gauld smashed his shot into the back of the net, and the Sounders were sunk.

The Sounders created a handful of chances after that point, but regardless of their efforts they just weren’t really in the game anymore, and it only got worse with Laborda’s goal towards the end of the first half to make it 3-0. Brian Schmetzer and his staff basically acknowledged that at halftime when they made a massive four changes.

The Sounders got a goal from Jordan Morris just after the hour mark on the sort of play you would think they’d be able to put together with regularity. Albert Rusnák played a through ball for Morris who got in behind the defense and beat goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka with a shot from just inside the area, but by the time that goal went in Vancouver had already scored again through Brian White and the Sounders had only managed to make it 4-1.

Seattle continued to try to press the issue, but one such attempt resulted in Vancouver’s fifth goal in the 70th. Stuart Hawkins, who had come on at halftime, carried the ball into the Vancouver half, but his attempt to play a line-breaking pass instead turned over possession and although the Sounders managed to get numbers back their scrambling defense still allowed Vancouver to easily play through them and eventually Cvetkovic got a touch to the ball under a challenge from Hawkins and poked it past Andrew Thomas and into the back of the net.

It’s a miserable performance, a miserable defeat in a season that has been full of them. The Sounders now head into their Decision Day home match against LAFC with their lives on the line. They currently sit in 9th place, but could potentially be in 10th when today’s matches end. Either way, they’ll likely need a win against LAFC to even be in the play-in round.

Lineups

Two changes for the Sounders as Jordan Morris returns to the starting lineup ahead of Sebastian Gomez and Snyder Brunell starts in place of Hassani Dotson alongside Cristian Roldan.

Key moments

1' - Goal, Vancouver. Kossa-Rienzi gets a touch on the ball but can’t keep Caicedo from going past him to send in a cross that White heads home as Ragen and Nouhou both fail to meaningfully challenge for it. 1-0, Vancouver

10’ - Goal, Vancouver. Nouhou gets easily beat by Ocampo who then finds Gauld with a pass and Gauld smashes his shot into the back of the net to double the lead. 2-0, Vancouver

14’ - Chance. Ferreira sends in a cross to Morris who runs in behind the defense inside the box, but his header is hit over the bar.

22’ - Shot. Joveljić picks up a loose ball in Vancouver’s end and tries to capitalize, firing after a few touches to carry the ball forward but his shot is parried away.

26’ - Tip! White easily beats Nouhou to another header, and only Thomas tipping it over the bar keeps Vancouver from adding another goal to their tally.

28’ - Corner. Rusnák takes several touches at the edge of the box looking for an opening, eventually taking a shot that goes out for a corner.

43’ - Goal, Vancouver. Laborda makes it three, easily heading in a cross at the back post from Gauld under absolutely zero pressure from KKR. 3-0, Vancouver

HT - Subs. Paul Arriola, Hassani Dotson, Sebastian Gomez, and Stuart Hawkins all enter for the Sounders, replacing Snyder Brunell, Jesus Ferreira, Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, and Nouhou.

47’ - Chance. The Sounders get into the box with numbers, but the final touch comes from a lunging Morris who can’t get the power or placement he needs.

49’ - Shot. Vancouver get out on a counterattack, but Caicedo’s shot from the top of the box goes wide of the far post.

53’ - Goal, Vancouver. Caicedo easily gets past Alex Roldan to play a ball from the end line to White, who puts it in the net with a simple touch. 4-0, Vancouver

55’ - Chance. Morris gets in behind and sends a dangerous cross towards the penalty spot, but Takaoka is able to pluck it out of the air.

57’ - Chance. Gomez plays a smart ball into the box for Arriola who hits a dangerous cross that falls for Joveljić inside the 6-yard box with Morris for company, but they can’t generate a shot on an open goal before Takaoka gathers the ball.

58’ - Shot. Joveljić has a hit from the edge of the box that forces Takaoka into a save.

59’ - Stop. Diaby turns Arriola inside the area and fires off a shot that clangs off the post before Thomas gathers it up.

62’ - Goal! Morris gets in behind the defense on a through ball from Rusnák, and makes no mistake with his shot from the top of the box! 4-1, Vancouver

63’ - Subs. Bruno Caicedo, Edier Ocampo, and Brian White leave the game, replaced by Kwasi Poku, Cheikh Sabaly, and Ranko Veselinovic for Vancouver.

70’ - Goal, Vancouver. A turnover in Vancouver’s half by Hawkins leads to some abysmal defending and Cvetkovic poking the ball past Thomas. 5-1, Vancouver

73’ - Sub. Ralph Priso comes on in place of Ryan Gauld for Vancouver.

78’ - Sub. Jordan Morris comes off as Kim Kee-hee comes on for Seattle.

81’ - Shot. Joveljić hits a curling effort from just inside the Vancouver box that forces Takaoka to push it wide for a corner.

82’ - Sub. Mihail Gherasimencov comes on for Vancouver as Tate Johnson comes off.

84’ - Chance. Arriola sends in a dangerous cross to Dotson who finds himself in a pocket of space in the box, but his touch lacks the power to beat Takaoka.

90’ - Chance. Gomez plays Alex Roldan into space behind the defense and he finds Arriola near the penalty spot, but Arriola’s attempted first-time shot goes well wide.

Quick thoughts

Reaping what’s been sown: The Sounders now find themselves in desperate need of a result that has felt more unlikely with every passing minute over the last couple of weeks as LAFC come to town for the regular-season finale. Depending on what happens in the Timbers’ game tonight, it’s possible the Sounders could be eliminated even if they win. If they miss the playoffs, it would mark just the second time in their MLS era, although both have come in the last five seasons. This result against Vancouver — and the four that preceded it — is part of the reason, but it’s impossible to look at this game in particular and not see the impact of personnel decisions made well before today. The insistence upon playing Alex Roldan as a CB ahead of more natural players in that position, from veterans like Kim Kee-hee and Ryan Sailor to a high-ceiling prospect in Stuart Hawkins, has been part of it. That choice itself has also meant that Roldan isn’t available to play his usual position as a right back, meaning that Kalani Kossa-Rienzi has gone from a decent backup to a virtually written-in-pen starter. While KKR does offer some value as a hard worker and a provider of width, his struggles both against the ball and in possession make the team weaker. On the other side of the defense, Nouhou’s struggles continue to be a source of frustration, and both players bring into focus that the Sounders have preferred to give minutes to both ahead of Reed Baker-Whiting before trading RBW to Nashville SC where the former homegrown has starred for the Supporters Shield winners and possible MLS points record-setters.

A season already in the past: I’m not going to claim that the Sounders didn’t put in a decent effort against Vancouver, I think they did at least for much of the game. But the same sloppiness that has so often been a source of their problems put them in an inescapable hole before 10 minutes had been played. After that it wasn’t so much that they weren’t trying, but that the players didn’t believe that their efforts would make enough of a difference to matter. Poor performances and bad mistakes — today, and in far too many games to mention this season — left whatever change could be conjured far too small to overcome the deficit the team faced. Despite a quadruple substitution at halftime, and a Jordan Morris goal in the 62nd minute to provide a breath of life, the Sounders seemed to have a foot in the offseason already.

Just too easy: It’s easy enough to look at the standings and see the No. 1 team in the West hosting the No. 9 team and figure that there shouldn’t be much of a contest. That’s fair enough, but this was ostensibly a rivalry game and the Sounders comfortably had the better of the Whitecaps when the two sides met in Concacaf Champions Cup play at the start of the season. Vancouver were even starting with Thomas Müller on the bench — and never needed to bring him on — and still Seattle seemed to roll out the red carpet right through their own midfield and defense for them. After the Sounders looked arguably at their best when utilizing a press and counter-press against Houston on Wednesday, they were far too easy to play against and through today. They got outdone in nearly every attacking statistic, perhaps expectedly, but also lost out in every defensive statistic except for blocks (Seattle had 3 to Vancouver’s 2) and saves (both sides had 4), with Vancouver dominating in interceptions (17 to 6) and clearances (23 to 13) while also winning a whopping 39 duels to 23. It was just way too easy, and not for the first time.

Notable quote

Jordan Morris: "We have to learn from this one, but we say that after every loss and for some reason we’re not learning. … We still feel like we’re a good team, feel like we have good players. I don’t have a good answer for why (they played like this)."
