Seattle Reign couldn't separate themselves in a tight NWSL playoff race and fell 1-0 to the North Carolina Courage, dropping out of playoff contention. Gianna Paul scored North Carolina's lone goal in the 48th minute off an unfortunate deflection that Reign goalkeeper Claudia Dickey couldn't adjust to.

The Reign didn't give North Carolina many chances beyond that, but they couldn't find rhythm on offense and were shut out for the first time since May 15.

Just three matches remain in the regular season. After a week off for a FIFA international break, the Reign (12-11-4, 40 points) start a two-game road trip. First up is a match against the Chicago Stars (5-19-2, 17 points) on Sunday, October 18.

Quotes

Laura Harvey

Her overall thoughts on the match:

"I just think there's basics in football — our quality of pass, quality of touch, decision-making, winning first and second balls. We didn't do enough of it. And this league's too unforgiving. When you don't do those things well enough in a higher percentage than the opponent, you tend not to win games, and we didn't do that tonight."

On the attack lacking quality in the final third:

"I just think we lacked quality in those moments. And it's tough — I think the goal, obviously, was lucky, and at the end we're unlucky, but even then we're pushing. Any time we had a little bit of quality, good things happen — a corner or a save. But we just didn't show enough of that tonight. So, disappointing in that respect, which I understand the points about quality."

On Maddie Dahlien's second-half move to the right side to escape the matchup with Ryan Williams:

"She's faster. Yeah, I think it's — we have to be smarter too in those moments. Maddie's not going to beat Ryan in a one-v-one race, straight up. We've got to manipulate Ryan and try and move her, and we didn't do enough of that. But we felt that Maddie could get a little bit of joy if we put her on to the right, which we tried for a bit, but then she'd put all of her energy into trying to beat Ryan for 70-odd minutes, or whatever it was. And yeah, that's something that I think we can collectively be better at — if we know that someone's as fast as somebody else, we can't just keep playing that basic ball in behind them and expect the same thing. The same thing just kept happening, and we kept doing it. So, yeah, a learning opportunity for us."

On the North Carolina goal:

"Obviously it got a deflection. I think, in the buildup, I didn't think we needed to be that intricate on the goal kick. But I'll watch it back, and then, obviously, yeah, disappointed — it takes a big deflection to loop over Claudia, which is obviously something that we can be disappointed with."

On starting Jess Fishlock and the front four's struggles to get into the game:

"I think the whole front four had a tough time being able to get into the game, and when you can't keep the ball higher up, you can't then get a Jess Fishlock into the game — it's too difficult. And we didn't do that enough. We didn't connect the first pass well enough. We'd get it up and then we'd lose it, and then we'd get it up and then we'd lose it, and there was not enough rhythm to our game, I didn't think, tonight."

On Emeri Adames's performance off the bench:

"She's had a good couple of weeks of training since she's come back from the U-20 World Cup. That's why we put her on the field tonight — just to see if she could have a little bit of quality in those moments, and I think she got one decent shot off that created a corner."

On North Carolina's gameplan matching expectations:

"It was exactly what we expected of them. Exactly. And again, I think that's something that when we impose ourselves on the game in the way that we believe we can, and do often, we can create the problems for the opponent. North Carolina are going to play — they're going to try and play through the lines, they're going to try and combine round you. We talked about it all week. I went out and watched them in Utah. I knew exactly what they were going to do, and they did exactly that. They're a good team, they like to play football."

On Reign playing into North Carolina's hands in the first half:

"I think we played into their hands too much. We forced the ball into places they wanted it too much in the first half. We didn't do that as much in the second half, which I think is why the game was played more in their half than our half in the second half. And we changed the press at halftime — to be able to press the way we wanted to in the first half, you've got to really commit to it collectively, and I don't think we did that."

On whether it was an effort issue or a decision-making issue:

"I think it's all of it. I don't doubt that our players give effort — ever. But I think when things don't work once, we stop doing it, and it's not necessarily that the reason it didn't work is the decision that you made. And we fall into the trap of that too much at times."

Sam Meza and Phoebe McClernon

On their overall thoughts on the match:

McClernon: "I think that was pretty gutting. I think losing on a goal like that is obviously going to hurt. I think we're disappointed in the way that we came out in the first 15 or so. But there's still everything to play for. I don't think that we feel defeated by this loss. I think you've seen our mentality on a stage this whole season — when we get knocked down, we get back up and we come back stronger. And I think this is just another opportunity for us to do that. We're going to full send it for the rest of the season, and I think there's a lot more of us to see."

Meza: "Just to piggyback off of what Phoebe said, I don't feel that we came out the best first half, to be honest. I think we weren't really winning our one-v-one battles, we weren't really connecting our passes, and the goal didn't really come off of a ton — it's not like they completely broke us, but when you don't do the basic things correctly, a goal like that can go in. So, obviously not happy with the goal, but like Phoebe said, we still have so much to play for, and we have a short break for the people that aren't on FIFA break or going off to international teams. So hopefully we can kind of reset a little bit, enjoy that break, and then come back ready to go to Chicago and get three points."

On what went wrong during the stretches they weren't satisfied with:

McClernon: "I think it was probably a confluence of factors. I don't think you could isolate it to one thing. I think there were instances where our quality let us down, there were instances where technically we let ourselves down, and there were instances where we just didn't have the mentality, and that let us down. But in any regard, there's just a lot that we can learn from this game, so I think we take that in stride."

On whether tonight's goal was unlucky given their recent run of home clean sheets:

Meza: "I think the goal was unlucky, but again, I'm going to go back — if we're not able to do the simple things correctly, then something like that happens, a goal like that happens, and that's just something that we have to kind of take in and be honest with ourselves and say it just wasn't good enough. But this group is great at kind of coming back, like Phoebe said — we have the mentality, we can be honest with ourselves and look at film, and understand that that just wasn't good enough. But yeah, I think we'll be fine and we'll be ready to go to Chicago and get three points."

On approaching the upcoming break in the schedule:

McClernon: "Personally, I'm grateful for the break. I think this season is a dogfight. It's hard to go the full length of this season — I think every team is physical and athletic, and on top of that, excellent at soccer, and it wears on you. So getting meaningful days off, and opportunities to support our teammates who are going on international duty, I think it all matters. They get that confidence boost, and we get to recharge, and I think that's all for the better."

On preparing for and limiting Ashley Sanchez's impact:

Meza: "I mean, I think Sanchez is a phenomenal player — I think she always has been, and this year it's been a great season for her. So we respect her a lot. I think, obviously, we know that she's been on a roll, so we were anticipating that. And I think for us, she's tricky, she's savvy on the ball, so for us it was just about kind of getting numbers around her, and prohibiting her — even if she gets you the first time, making sure that the second time we're there. Yeah, I think we did well, but kudos to her, she's having a great season."

McClernon: "I would also say huge credit to MC [Madison Curry] and Ry [Ryanne Brown]. I think all season, really, not just in this game, they've just been awesome for us, coming up big in really big moments."

On in-game tenacity and adjusting when something doesn't work:

McClernon: "I don't know if I would equate those two points. I think in terms of us trying one thing and it not working, I don't know if that's necessarily our tenacity. I think it's hard in games when you try to do something and it doesn't come off. And I think, as Sam said, we are quick to look internally and see — did I make a mistake on that? And I think sometimes that can stand in your way, because it isn't always that you played a bad ball and that's why that happened. It can be a million different things that lead to why maybe that didn't come off. And I think we need to have the ability to zoom out and see the bigger picture, and understand that that space is a space to exploit — we can keep doing that. And maybe, in terms of tenacity, that refers to our press, and maybe if they break our press once, it doesn't mean we stop doing that — it just means we fine-tune it."

On what made scoring difficult tonight, ending their 17-game scoring streak:

Meza: "I just go back to our lack of quality. Sometimes it just didn't come off — either the pass was too hard or the pass was too short, or it was just a little bit too predictable. I would just say it was a lack of quality, and obviously scoring is the hardest part of the game. And it's not just on the front line — it's as a whole team, what can we do better to create better opportunities for ourselves. But again, we'll just look back at film, and it's just about honesty and trying to be better next game."

On the impact of the substitutes:

Meza: "I think it kind of just takes everybody. Anytime our subs come on, the expectation is for them to come on and bring a lot of energy and intensity, and I would say our subs do that. It's not always going to look or feel great, but I think today Koko had a great game when she came in — I thought her energy was great defensively, she was getting into tackles, and her free kick — Sally did well too. Sally's a very savvy, technical player, so anytime we can get her into games like this, where we need somebody in the pocket to turn, she's great, and she did amazing. Really proud of her, and really proud of the subs. Emory, obviously, is brilliant at taking people on, on that wing. So it takes all of us. But unfortunately we just weren't able to get the goal — I think we were pretty close, I think at the end we were kind of knocking, and it's just unfortunate. When it gets later in games, it's just kind of tough, right? You feel a little rushed."

McClernon: "I would echo that for sure. I think our subs all season have been massive for us, and I think you see how massive that is because we rotate the lineup a lot, too — we have any number of variable starting elevens that we could play with, and I think everybody's hungry for that, and you see that when subs come on the field."
