Riding the momentum of a win in Game 2, the Seattle Sounders will now play a winner-take-all Game 3 against Minnesota United today at 1 PM. The Sounders have not lost in regulation in five games (4-0-1), while the Loons have just one regulation win in their last five (1-2-2). But advancement today doesn’t necessarily require a regulation win, as the match will go straight to a shootout if it’s tied at the end of regulation.
The Sounders’ win over Minnesota on Monday was their first against them this year after the Loons had come out on top in the first three meetings. The Sounders’ four tallies also equaled a season-high for goals allowed by Minnesota United and also equaled the Sounders’ playoff record.
Obed Vargas became the fourth Sounder to score multiple goals in a playoff game, joining Raúl Ruidíaz, Jordan Morris and Clint Dempsey. Morris also set the Sounders’ all-time record with his 10th career playoff goal, tying Denís Bouanga for the most among active MLS players.
Notes
- The Sounders have a record of 12-5 in elimination playoff games during the Brian Schmetzer era. The Loons are 2-4 all-time in such games, but are riding a four-game winless run.
- Brian Schmetzer has 19 career playoff wins and a .688 winning percentage, which is fourth best among coaches with at least 10 games.
- The winner of this game will play the winner of San Diego FC-Portland Timbers in the Western Conference semifinals.
