Obed Vargas has been called into the Mexico senior national team, it was announced on Friday. This is the second time Vargas has earned a senior national team call-up, but the first in more than a year since he made his debut on Oct. 14, 2024 against the United States. Mexico will play Uruguay on Nov. 15 at Estadio Corono in Torreon, Mexico and Paraguay on Nov. 18 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Since making his full national team debut, Vargas has been a regular participant in Mexico’s setup, but only with various youth national teams. Most recently he competed for Mexico at the U20 World Cup where he started all five games.
Since then, Vargas has continued to excel with the Sounders. After his brace on Monday in Game 2 of the Sounders playoff series against Minnesota United, Vargas now has six goals and six assists in 40 appearances across all competitions. He recently was named the top player in MLS’s 22-under-22 list and finished second in Young Player of the Year voting.
Joining Vargas on international duty, so far, will be Cristian Roldan (USA), Reed Baker-Whiting (USA U21s) and Snyder Brunell (USA U19s). The international window coincides with a break in the MLS Playoffs between the first round and conference semifinals, which are scheduled to resume on the weekend of Nov. 21-22.
