The final 2026 playoff match at Interbay Stadium lived up to the standard set throughout the knockout rounds. Colorado Storm and Ballard FC traded punches in a hard-fought, physical match that was up-tempo from the opening whistle.
The visitors came out on the front foot, looking to test a heavy-legged Ballard side coming off a 120-minute match just 48 hours earlier. Colorado moved the ball quickly and tried to stretch the Bridges, but Ballard matched the tempo and made the most of its opportunities.
The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute, when Ballard’s Joschi Schelb found the net, continuing his torrid postseason scoring pace. Just four minutes later, Colorado took advantage of some questionable marking in the box and Tobi Osifodunrin put away a corner to level the score at one apiece.
That scoreline would hold until halftime. Ballard has been excellent during these playoffs at using the intermission to regroup and reset their tactics, but it was Colorado that came out looking like the more dangerous team in the second half. Their pace and pressure paid off in the 60th minute, when Johan Murillo nodded a header past Noah Newman to give the Storm the lead.
It was the first time Ballard FC had trailed this postseason, but it didn’t last long.
Seven minutes later, Schelb calmly converted from the penalty spot to pull Ballard level. Four minutes after that, Juan Alvarez delivered a dangerous free kick that took a fortunate deflection before finding the back of the net, giving the Bridges a 3-2 lead with less than 20 minutes remaining.
Just after the match entered stoppage time, Colorado’s Blaise Richard tied it once again, and the entire stadium seemed resigned to yet another extra-time battle. Between Ballard and Salmon Bay, Interbay had already hosted four 120-minute playoff matches this postseason. It looked as though a fifth was inevitable.
But in a moment that instantly added to the lore of this club and their home stadium, Etienne Veillard fired a shot from the right side that deflected off a Colorado defender and into the back of the net. The crowd hadn’t even processed the equalizer from a minute before, and didn’t need to. It was an unbelievable sequence that sent the crowd into as wild a celebration as Interbay has seen. The victory sends Ballard back to the Western Conference Final for the second consecutive season. The Bridges will face Ventura County Fusion on Friday, July 24, at noon (PT) in Flint, Michigan, with a place in the USL League Two National Semifinal on the line. Ventura County advanced by defeating San Francisco City to claim the Pacific Division side of the bracket and now stands between Ballard and another trip to the league's final four.
