For a few glorious moments at the end of extra time on Friday night, Ballard FC thought its place in the Western Conference semifinal was secure.
After more than two hours of frustration, Joschi Schelb finally broke the deadlock in the second minute of stoppage time, driving home a beautiful finish from just inside the penalty area and sending Interbay Stadium into celebration. Players streamed off the bench, supporters erupted, and the Bridges appeared to have survived a tense USL League Two Western Conference quarterfinal against Utah United.
Five minutes later, they had to win the match all over again.
Utah found one final opportunity, equalizing with an acrobatic scissor kick off a corner in the sixth minute of added time before goalkeeper Noah Newman delivered two penalty saves, and Ray Mendez buried the decisive spot kick, sending Ballard into Sunday's Western Conference semifinal with a 4-2 shootout victory following a dramatic 1-1 draw.
The win keeps alive Ballard's pursuit of a second USL League Two championship and another trip to the national final after last year's runner-up finish.
For long stretches, the match looked like it might become one of the most frustrating nights in club history.
Ballard controlled much of the evening, outshooting Utah United 18-9 while forcing six saves from the visitors' goalkeeper. The Bridges earned a staggering 15-2 advantage in corner kicks and spent much of the night camped in Utah's defensive third, but the breakthrough refused to come.
Utah United, making just the second playoff appearance in club history, defended resolutely while remaining dangerous enough to test Newman on several occasions.
Despite missing five University of Washington players from the 2025 National Championship team who departed this week to represent the United States at the FISU America Games in Lima, Peru, Ballard still dictated the match for much of its 126 minutes. The absence of Zach Ramsey, Stockton Short, Cameron Cruz, Emmett Layman, and Jordy Dierks forced others into larger roles, and the Bridges responded with another composed performance that simply lacked a finish.
Until it didn't.
In the 121st minute, Schelb collected the ball just inside the box and rifled a low finish into the net, finally solving Utah's defense after more than two hours of sustained pressure. Interbay exploded as Ballard players sprinted from the bench, believing they had secured another trip to the Western Conference semifinal.
Instead, one final twist remained.
Although only two minutes of stoppage time had initially been indicated at the end of extra time, play continued long enough for Utah to earn just its second corner kick of the night. The visitors made the most of it, producing a spectacular scissor kick from Nico Golesis that found the net in the sixth minute of added time and stunned the home crowd.
It felt like a gut punch. It was the sort of moment that could derail a team.
Instead, Ballard immediately regrouped.
After a long team huddle, Schelb calmly converted the opening penalty before Newman guessed correctly to deny Carson Lifferth and hand Ballard an early advantage. Jack-Ryan Jeremiah and Juan Alvarez each converted their attempts while Utah answered through Tita and Guadarrama.
After Sean Sent's fourth-round attempt was saved, Utah briefly had life.
Newman, a Sounders Academy product, took it away.
The incoming Husky goalkeeper denied Jon Fritcher for his second penalty save of the night, putting the outcome squarely in Ray Mendez's hands.
The midfielder stepped to the spot and drove his penalty shoulder-high to the goalkeeper's left, sending Ballard players racing toward their goalkeeper in celebration after one of the wildest playoff finishes in club history.
Newman's two shootout saves capped a remarkable performance. Already called upon throughout regulation and extra time, the Husky goalkeeper produced the two biggest saves of the season when they mattered most.
Ballard now turns its attention to Sunday's Western Conference semifinal against Colorado Storm at Interbay Stadium. Another victory would move the Bridges within one win of a return to the USL League Two national semifinals.
