Four more victories now stand between the Bridges and another shot at a national championship.

For 45 minutes on Sunday evening, Ballard FC's season sat on a knife's edge.

After spending most of the summer chasing Snohomish United in the Northwest Division standings, the Bridges entered the regular season finale knowing a draw wasn't enough. Snohomish's earlier 2-0 victory over Ballard meant the visitors owned the head-to-head tiebreaker. Anything short of three points would end Ballard's streak of division championships and send the defending Western Conference champions into the postseason as runners-up.

Instead, Ballard produced its best 45 minutes when it mattered most.

Four unanswered second-half goals transformed a tense winner-take-all showdown into a 4-0 statement victory, securing a fourth consecutive Northwest Division championship and sending Ballard into the USL League Two playoffs with plenty of momentum.

The match felt less like a regular-season finale than a playoff game.

Snohomish entered Interbay Stadium unbeaten in 13 matches and needing only a draw to claim its first division title. Ballard, meanwhile, had little margin for error after dropping the first meeting between the clubs earlier this summer. In every practical sense, the postseason had already begun.

The opening half reflected those stakes.

Ballard gradually settled into the match and controlled more of the possession, but clear chances were difficult to come by. Snohomish created the better opportunities, and Angel Martinez's goal-line clearance just before halftime preserved the scoreless deadlock and kept Ballard's title hopes alive.

What followed was a reminder of why Ballard has established itself as one of the most successful clubs in USL League Two. Four straight Northwest Division championships, multiple Western Conference titles, and last year's run to the national championship game have made sustained success the expectation rather than the exception.

"We regrouped at halftime and focused on just being true to who we are," Anton Hjalmarsson said afterward.

Head coach Mutanda Kwesele delivered a similar message.

"We needed to shore up some tactical things, but ultimately we needed to remember who we are. We needed to stop being timid and go back to our anchors to unlock a very good team."

Those anchors have become central to Ballard's identity under Kwesele.

"Our cultural anchors are that we are bold, diverse, and relentless," he said. "Our performance anchors are that we play with joy, with intensity, and with unity."

The adjustment paid dividends almost immediately.

Less than three minutes after the restart, goalkeeper Noah Newman launched a long outlet to Zach Ramsey, who drove into the attacking third before finding Emmett Layman for the opening goal. After 48 tense minutes, Ballard finally had the breakthrough it desperately needed.

Once the first goal arrived, the match opened up.

Luke Hammond doubled the lead ten minutes later after another sustained Ballard attack. Hjalmarsson then scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season through persistence in the penalty area before Joschi Schelb added a late fourth as Interbay celebrated another division championship.

The victory also capped an impressive finish to the regular season.

Ballard completed a perfect 7-0 home record, finished with 42 goals — second most in the Western Conference — and enters the playoffs riding an eight-match winning streak with three consecutive clean sheets. Even more impressive, the Bridges closed the regular season by scoring 18 unanswered goals while conceding none over their final 315 minutes of play.

That form will be tested immediately.

Ballard hosts Mountain Division runner-up Utah United on tonight at Interbay Stadium in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs. Earlier that day, Snohomish United gets another chance against unbeaten Colorado Storm, with the two winners meeting Sunday, again at Interbay.

The road back to the national championship game, however, is only getting started.

Survive the opening weekend and Ballard would advance to the Western Conference Final. Two more victories beyond that would be required to reach another USL League Two National Championship match, giving the Bridges a chance to finish the job after falling just short a year ago.

Complicating matters is the annual reality of summer amateur soccer.

Several University of Washington players have departed for an overseas tour, forcing Ballard to rely on the depth it has built throughout the season. Fortunately for Kwesele, recent additions Joe Highfield, Michael Divano, and Alex Villanueva have helped soften those losses, while Hjalmarsson and the in-form Schelb give Ballard one of the conference's most dangerous attacking combinations.

"This may be the deepest team we've ever had," club co-owner Sam Zisette said. "Mutanda and his staff have created a wonderful culture, and the way he's been able to get this group to come together is incredible."

Another reward may also be on the horizon.

Ballard's fourth consecutive Northwest Division title almost certainly places the club in position to qualify for the 2027 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Under the current qualification process, the highest-performing USL League Two division champions receive berths, although U.S. Soccer has not yet officially announced next year's field.

Ballard has now claimed four consecutive Northwest Division championships and reached the playoffs in every season of the club's existence. Sunday's win added another banner to the club's growing collection.

Ballard's playoff journey begins Friday at Interbay Stadium, where the Bridges host Mountain Division runner-up Utah United in the second match of a Western Conference quarterfinal doubleheader. Earlier in the evening, unbeaten Colorado Storm faces Northwest Division runner-up Snohomish United, with Sunday's semifinal matching the two surviving clubs. Ballard reached last year's national championship game by defending home field throughout the Western Conference playoffs, and with Interbay once again hosting the opening two rounds, the Bridges have another opportunity to use one of USL League Two's best home atmospheres as a springboard toward another deep postseason run.
