SEATLLE – The Seattle Sounders fell once again, this time in a 2–0 loss to the visiting Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday. Goals in the 77th and 82nd minutes from Rayan Elloumi and Thomas Müller proved to be more than the Sounders could handle. This result secured the Cascadia Cup for the Whitecaps, and meant that the last two times Seattle fans have shown up to watch their side play in an MLS match at home were losses to their biggest rivals where they never looked especially likely to claim a win for themselves.

The first half was a pretty dull affair. Seattle and Vancouver held roughly equal shares of possession, but the Whitecaps were able to do a lot more with it as they outshot the hosts 8-2 going into halftime. The biggest moments from the opening 45 minutes were a pair of injuries, first when Jeevan Badwal was forced out of the game in the 18th minute for a concussion substitution. Then in the 36th minute the Sounders were forced to make an injury sub of their own, replacing Jesús Ferreira with Sebastian Gomez after Ferreira picked up a right leg injury.

The second half was even more lopsided as Vancouver dominated possession as well as shots, keeping 61% of possession and outshooting the Sounders 11–3. Seattle created a few good looks prior to Vancouver opening up the scoring, but a lack of decisiveness and quality inside the area left them wanting. First a Paul Rothrock cross failed to really connect with either Danny Musovski or Albert Rusnák in the 54th, then it was Rothrock cutting inside to try to find a shot in the 76th that took too long to develop and was blocked.

Almost directly following that blocked Rothrock shot, the Whitecaps stormed down the field to score their first goal. Emmanuel Sabbi drove down the field as several Sounders players missed tackles, failed to win the ball or generally stop him before he found Elloumi who put a nice finish beyond the reach of Andrew Thomas to make it 1-0.

Five minutes later the Sounders found themselves picking the ball out of their net once again. Moments before Nouhou had sprinted across the field ahead of an on-rushing Whitecaps attacker with plenty of time to clear the ball or turn and take it upfield, but instead he chose to awkwardly shield the ball while calling for Thomas to come and pick it up. All the while the ball and the player drew closer until Nouhou eventually kicked it into Thomas’ hands from close range. The ref immediately signaled for an indirect free kick, and on the following play Müller was the one to take the decisive shot that pinged in off the far post to double the visitors’ lead.

The Sounders will now look to turn their fortunes around on particularly short rest when they host Austin FC on Wednesday.

Lineups

A whole host of changes for the Sounders as they return to MLS play following the 2-1 loss to Chivas de Guadalajara in Leagues Cup. Andrew Thomas returns to the starting spot in goal with a back line of Kalani Kossa-Rienzi, Alex Roldan, Jackson Ragen, and Nouhou in front of him. Snyder Brunell and Peter Kingston man the double-pivot, with Jesús Ferreira, Albert Rusnák and Paul Rothrock in front of them and Danny Musovski up top.

Key moments

18’ - Sub. Vancouver replaces Jeevan Badwal with Rayan Elloumi as a concussion substitute.

27’ - Block. Ocampo sends in a well-struck cross from the right side, but Ragen is able to make first contact and head it behind for a corner.

30’ - Chance! Nouhou plays a nice ball in behind for Rothrock to run onto, but Rothrock’s tight angle shot is blocked by Takaoka. Rusnák takes a shot on the rebound, but puts his shot wide.

31’ - Almost! Brunell has a great look after a great touch from Musovski, but his attempt to smash the ball in at the near post goes just wide.

36’ — Sub. Jesús Ferreira leaves the game with an apparent leg injury, replaced by Sebastian Gomez for Seattle.

40’ — Block. Vancouver has a great look after a corner gets recycled, but Paul Rothrock blocks the shot and Thomas clears it off the line.

43’ - Shot. Larraz takes a rip from deep, but his shot goes just over the bar for a goal kick.

54’ - Miss. Gomez plays Rothrock into the box on the left and he hits a cross that both Musovski and Rusnák fail to make contact with.

77’ - Goal, Vancouver. Elloumi puts the finishing touch on a nice sequence from the Whitecaps made to look even better by sloppy defending from the Sounders back line. 1-0, Vancouver

82’ - Goal, Vancouver. Nouhou puts Thomas in a bad spot with a back pass that Thomas handles in the box, giving Vancouver an indirect free kick that Müller scores from. 2-0, Vancouver

85’ - Sub. Seattle brings on Charlie Gaffney, replacing Alex Roldan.

86’ - Sub. Nikola Djordjevic replaces Emmanuel Sabbi for Vancouver.

90’+3 - Catch. Müller nearly makes it 3 with an overhead kick, but Thomas is able to snatch it out of the air.

Quick thoughts

The pain will end ... eventually: The bad run of form, the injuries, the lack of signings, it’s all going to come to an end some day. Just not yet. The league losing streak extended to seven games with this loss. Another player was added to the ever-growing injury list when Ferreira left the game in the 36th minute with a right leg injury. The vibes are abysmal. None of it will last forever, nothing does, but unless something changes in the next week with the midweek game against Austin FC it’s hard to see how any of those bad runs come to an end any time soon.

Not enough, not even close: Brian Schmetzer talked about the team’s effort after the game, noting that he couldn’t fault that element of the game. But in so many ways it’s just not enough. There’s no argument that the Whitecaps that showed up here tonight, despite an injury list of their own, had a meaningful talent advantage that only increased when Ferreira left the game. But they weren’t just better, they out-worked the Sounders. Schmetzer pointed to 30 to 35 good minutes, and acknowledged that that’s obviously not enough, but if your highlight is that for a third of the game you were holding your own at home things are in a pretty terrible place. He noted that looking at his bench the first attacking option was 20-year-old Sebastian Gomez, a good but incredibly inexperienced player at this level. When Ferreira left the game the Sounders were left with only two players making the max salary or more available: Nouhou and Rusnák. It’s just not enough to win games. Surely Schmetzer and the available players can do more to find results in this game, but they’re all playing with their hands tied behind their back by the lack of reinforcements.

Questionable decisions all the way down: There are plenty of things to be frustrated about right now, bad decisions at every level both on the field and off. Some of the most frustrating ones coming out of this game have to do with Nouhou. Just before Vancouver’s first goal, immediately after Rothrock’s blocked shot, for absolutely no reason Nouhou chose to body check goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka as he jumped to claim the ball and received a yellow card. Then on the following play, he was overzealous in dropping deep to cover the goal line, keeping Elloumi onside to be able to eventually score the goal. On the second goal he’s the reason for the indirect free kick from which Vancouver scored. These are exactly the sorts of plays, the sorts of decisions that he makes week after week. They rarely seem to come with consequences, rather the team has dealt away every player who was ostensibly competition for his spot this season and gave him the captain’s armband on several occasions. The club has boasted of their next-man-up ethos over the last few years in particular, claiming to foster internal competition, while simultaneously enshrining a player in the starting lineup who routinely puts his teammates in bad positions and is more likely to cost them a result than earn them one. It’s infuriating.

Notable quote

Alex Roldan on the losing streak: ‘We know that this club has high expectations, the city, the fans have high expectations, and we're not meeting them right now. The fans in the city don't deserve this. We need to look at ourselves and do a better job.’

Player spotlight

It’s hard for anyone to stand out in a positive light in a game like this, but Kalani Kossa-Rienzi was solid in his 73 minutes winning 4/6 ground duels and 1/2 aerial duels, adding 7 defensive contributions and completing 23/27 passes.
