Disheartening defeat: Sounders lose at home to Dynamo

Lack of finishing leaves Seattle in a bad spot.

SEATTLE – The Seattle Sounders fell 1–0 to the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday night, courtesy of a Lucas Halter goal from a corner kick in the 26th minute. On a night when the Sounders could have potentially clinched a playoff spot, they now find themselves sitting in eighth and only two points clear of red line.

The first half was frustrating, as the Sounders had the advantage in most metrics other than the most important one: goals scored. Seattle out-shot Houston 8-1, and had a great look following a free kick in the 4th minute when Cristian Roldan received the ball in a pocket of space inside the box but he hit his shot wide. The Sounders continued to create chances and held the majority of possession, using an energetic counter-press to win the ball back when they lost it to the tune of 70% possession and 247 touches in the opposition half.

The task grew a bit tougher in the 26th minute, though, when Houston scored on their first and only shot of the half. Kalani Kossa-Rienzi had no choice but to concede a corner while defending a quick counter 1-on-1, and on the corner the service just cleared the heads of Sebastian Gomez and Dejan Joveljić while centerback Lucas Halter completely lost his marker, Hassani Dotson, on his way to head the ball home and take the lead.

The second half was much the same, as Seattle outshot their visitors 11-1 with 26 touches in the opposition box to Houston’s 3, but still couldn’t find a goal. They generated plenty good chances, and nearly had their reward on a number of occasions, but Houston goalkeeper Jonathan Bond came up with the necessary saves when he was called upon.

According to Fotmob the Sounders created 2.02 xG to Houston’s 0.26, but obviously the scoreline is all that really matters at this point in the season as Seattle now find themselves in 8th in the West and winless in their last four. Once again a lack of sharpness, particularly in the final third, left them struggling to break down Houston’s defense after the goal. There are some fair arguments that with a different referee in charge the game turns out differently, particularly with a questionable no-call when Joveljić was clattered into in the box off the ball, but there was plenty of game before and after that moment for the Sounders to have gotten something and they failed to do so.

The Sounders now prepare for a trip to play the first-place Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 pm.

Quick thoughts

Gotta clean it up: It’s always difficult to score against a team that’s packed it in the way that the Dynamo did following their goal, but even before the visitors started sitting in Seattle were largely their own worst enemies. There were boneheaded mistakes born out of trying to do too much, perhaps best illustrated by Nouhou taking the ball ahead of Hassani Dotson and promptly losing it after trying a pirouette in the first minute. Nouhou in particular had several such moments before being pulled at halftime, but he certainly wasn’t the only one. Time after time, the Sounders’ attacking movements fizzled out when players failed to connect simple passes, or opted for something cheeky like a back heel rather than the easier option. As the game wore on, they settled for hopeful crosses rather than trying to combine in order to create clearer chances. They’ll need to be cleaner in the next two games if they want any chance of being in a position to make noise should they still be alive when the playoffs start.

Destiny’s whims: The last four games have meant that the Sounders no longer control their own destiny when it comes to their place in the standings. Tied on points but behind the Colorado Rapids on wins, Seattle sit in 8th. While they could possibly climb a couple of places if they manage to win their final two games, that still would require that the teams above them — the Rapids and LAFC, who Seattle plays on Decision Day — lose points. While results around the conference had gone in their favor for a while, the Sounders failed repeatedly to capitalize and now find themselves in the difficult position of needing to break their bad run of form with games against two very difficult opponents in the Whitecaps and LAFC. Simply qualifying for the postseason is no longer a given. If past is precedent, they can’t really count on their luck going forward.

Still no ideal XI: With two games remaining in the regular season, the Sounders still don’t have a clear best or ideal starting lineup. Hassani Dotson has struggled to put in good performances in consecutive games, and whatever combinations they’ve tried in attack they’ve either struggled to create or convert chances. Brian Schmetzer and his staff have worked to play Jesus Ferreira into form, but he’s not been able to have the impact the team needs as he works his way back from injury, while Sebastian Gomez has earned starting opportunities with his performances as a sub but similarly has struggled to have the same kind of impact from the opening whistle. There are questions to be asked and position battles to be pondered ahead of every game, and after the final whistle there’s still no clear answers.

Notable quote

Brian Schmetzer on his assessment of the match: “My assessment of the loss, my emotions of the loss? Just not good enough. Houston’s a good team, but they’d won one of their last 11. ... the worst possible result. ... not happy, I think they put effort into the game, I don’t think they played with enough quality."

Player spotlight

Albert Rusnák created 6 chances, had a pair of shots, completed 86% of his 70 passes, had 15 passes into the final third, and was still putting in the work on defense late in the game to try to give the Sounders a chance at a point.
