Despite taking a 2-0 lead, playing up a man for more than a half and twice having chances to win the penalty shootout, the Seattle Sounders dropped a decisive Game 3 to Minnesota United on Saturday. Regulation ended 3-3 and the Sounders lost the shootout 7-6 with reserve goalkeeper Andrew Thomas hitting his 10th round attempt off the crossbar to seal the result. Thomas had earlier made two saves in the shootout to give the Sounders chances to win it.
The loss marks just the third time in 17 years that the Sounders have failed to advance at least to the Western Conference semifinals.
