Two wins for Dickey and an assist by McCammon highlight busy window.

An unusual 11 day international window meant a longer than usual break from NWSL action and more international matches than usual over the past two weeks. Nine Seattle Reign players were involved with national teams during this break, with all of them featuring in at least one game during the window.

USWNT

Claudia Dickey played in two of the three games the USWNT played against Japan in this window, earning wins in both of her starts. She conceded one goal in their 2-1 win on April 11, and kept a clean sheet in the final game of the series on April 17, which the US won 3-0. Between those two matches, former Reign goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce made her return to Lumen Field in a 1-0 Japan win.

US U23s

Neeku Purcell and the US U23 team traveled to Murcia, Spain, for three friendlies against European competition. Purcell was on the bench for the opening game against the Netherlands, a 1-1 draw. Purcell started their game against Denmark on April 13. That game was tied 1-1 after regulation, and because the result determined which team they would play in the final match of the window, it went to kicks from the spot to determine a winner. Purcell made a diving stop on a Denmark attempt while the US converted all five of their shots for the win. Purcell was an unused sub in the final game of the window, a 4-3 win over France.

US U20s

A foursome of Reign players joined the US U20 team for two friendlies against Brazil in Kansas City as part of the team’s preparation ahead of this fall’s U20 World Cup. In the opening game at CPKC Stadium, which the US won 2-0, Ainsley McCammon and Emeri Adames started the match, while Jordyn Bugg and Sofia Cedeno both came on in the 60th minute as substitutes.  McCammon earned a very nice assist on the opening goal, threading a pass between defenders to Linda Ullmark in the 24th minute.

The second game of the series finished 1-1 after inclement weather forced the match to be abandoned in the 79th minute. Bugg played the first half of this game and McCammon wore the captain’s armband and played 60 minutes. Cedeno and Adames entered the game at the hour mark as substitutes.

US U19s

Evan O’Steen and the US U19 team played a pair of friendlies against Argentina. O’Steen was on the bench for the opening game, which the US won 2-0. She started the second game, a 3-1 victory for the US.

Wales

In Europe, Angharad James-Turner and Wales played a pair of matches against Albania as part of UEFA’s World Cup qualifying process. The first game, at Wrexham, saw the Welsh win 4-0. James-Turner captained her side and played the full match. The return leg in Elbasan was a closer affair, with Wales escaping with a 1-0 win. James-Turner again played the full match, albeit without the armband this time. Wales is currently tied for the lead in Group B2 with 10 points from four matches, with a critical match against co-group leaders Czechia coming up in early June, which will determine the group winner.

Haiti

Nerilia Mondesir and Haiti were part of the opening stage of Concacaf’s World Cup qualifying process. In their first match of the window, Haiti defeated Anguilla 5-0. Mondesir entered the game at halftime with Haiti already up 3-0 and finished second on the team with five shots, but did not get on the scoresheet. Haiti’s second game, against the Dominican Republic, ended in a 1-1 draw. Mondesir started that game and played the full match, taking a team-high five shots. These results were enough for Haiti to finish at the top of their group and advance to the W Championship this November.

The international window ended on Saturday, with players returning to Seattle to resume training ahead of the Reign’s Lumen Field home opener next weekend. That game, against the Utah Royals, will take place on Sunday, April 26, at 5:00 PM PT.
