Seattle Reign FC look to end a four-game winless run when they host NJ/NY Gotham FC on Friday, May 15, at Lumen Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. PT, and the match will stream on Victory+.

It's an important matchup to close out the Reign's home stretch before a two-game road trip and then the league's month-long June break. The club won't return to Lumen Field until July 12. The Reign (3-3-2, 11 points, 8th place) are looking to find some form after failing to score in their last four matches, while the defending NWSL champions Gotham FC (4-2-3, 15 points, 5th place) arrive on a four-game unbeaten run.

The Reign's most recent result was a 1-0 loss to the Washington Spirit; Claudia Martínez's 84th-minute strike was enough to beat them despite the Reign dominating in almost every statistical category. Gotham, meanwhile, drew 1-1 with Boston Legacy FC, with Jaedyn Shaw's 36th-minute opener canceled out by Alba Caño three minutes later, ending Gotham's three-game winning streak.

Despite the Reign's recent struggles in front of goal, both head coach Laura Harvey and midfielder Sam Meza struck a measured tone heading into Friday.

"I think probably Sunday was as close to a complete performance that we've had for a while," Harvey said in a pre-match press conference. "Outside of taking chances, I think reducing Washington to what we reduced them to and coming out the other end of it with nothing was so heartbreaking."

Harvey was candid about the challenge of balancing improvement in the final third without losing what's worked defensively. "We can't always let one part of our game break down, work on that part, and then another part of our game break down, which has sort of been a bit of a theme so far. If final third is the thing we just need to focus on right now to get that, great, we can do that, but we can't forget that the reason we give ourselves all of these opportunities is because of how we defend and transition."

Sam Meza offered a similar take. "I think it's tough because you can play well and you can execute the game plan, and sometimes it just doesn't go your way," she said. "The group is very honest, and we're very transparent with maybe areas of our game that we just need to sharpen up a little bit. But the group is great. Everybody's super eager to get better in those areas."

Reign fans have some good news on the injury front. Harvey confirmed that defender Jordyn Bugg, who has been absent all season, will be available on Friday. Veteran midfielder Jess Fishlock, however, remains sidelined with a lower leg issue. For Gotham, midfielder Rose Lavelle remains out for a second week with a hamstring injury.

Head-to-Head

The Reign hold a slight edge in the all-time series against Gotham, with a record of 12-10-10 across all NWSL competitions. At home, the Reign are 6-7-5. The two clubs have combined to score 85 goals in their 32 meetings, with Seattle netting 44 and Gotham 41.

The last three meetings have all ended in draws, including a scoreless draw in New Jersey last October and a 1-1 draw at Lumen Field in March 2025 when Emeri Adames equalized in the 71st minute. The Reign have not beaten Gotham in their last five attempts and are looking to snap that streak in front of their home fans.

Key departures

Gotham came into 2026 with strong roster continuity after winning the NWSL Championship, but they weren't without losses. The most notable departure was forward Ella Stevens, a two-time Gotham trophy winner who left as a free agent. Gabi Portilho was traded to San Diego Wave FC for $175,000 in transfer funds, while Norwegian midfielder Stella Nyamekye moved abroad to SK Brann. The club also opted to not permanently acquire Geyse at the end of her loan.

Key additions

Gotham leaned heavily into the college free agent market to add promising young talent. Rookie forward Jordynn Dudley out of Florida State has been one of the most exciting newcomers in the league and leads Gotham with two assists. Stanford forward Andrea Kitahata and Butler midfielder Talia Sommer were also brought in, along with goalkeeper Teagan Wy. The club's also added midfielder Savannah McCaskill, acquired from San Diego Wave, and left winger Guro Reiten from Chelsea.

Key stats

  • Gotham have conceded just five goals in nine matches, the fewest of any team in the NWSL this season.
  • Gotham averages 1 goal per game, while the Reign average 0.9 goals per game.
  • Gotham are on a four-game unbeaten run (3W, 1D) heading into Friday.

What to watch

Defensive battle

A trademark style of play for Gotham is somewhat similar to what NWSL fans have said about the Reign: "sufferball." While they have also found their scoring in recent matches, Gotham have truly had success in this league because of just how difficult they are to break down. Allowing just five goals in nine games is a league-best mark, and it reflects a well-organized defensive shape under head coach Juan Carlos Amoros. Harvey described the typical Reign-Gotham encounter as "very chess matchy, very tactical." The Reign are not likely to get a lot of chances, so they have to take advantage of those little moments.

Goals change games

The Reign, who have been held scoreless in their last four matches, will need to be creative and patient — and finish the chances they create. The Reign are unbeaten when they score first. Gotham have found ways to win tight games and grind out results, which makes getting an early goal all the more critical for Seattle.

Harvey and Meza both know what that first goal could unlock for a team that has been knocking on the door. "I think when that happens, the weight will drain and we'll be maybe a little bit calmer in those moments," Harvey said. "We don't care how that ball goes in the net — just go in the net."

Meza pointed to the form the team showed earlier in the season as proof of what's possible once that connection clicks again. "I felt like at the beginning of the season we made some really good connections. We had a really good cadence going on, and it was a lot of fun — and obviously we have it in us. It's just about figuring out how we can do that consistently."

Possession battle

Against arguably the best attacking team in the league last week, the Reign were aggressive defensively — pressing high, keeping the ball and confidently building from the back against a high-pressure opponent. It worked quite well in virtually every aspect, except scoring goals, which is extremely important for winning games. The Spirit, who came in averaging a league-high 58% possession, had only a couple of clear chances on goal. Unfortunately, they finished one of those chances, and the Reign didn't.

Gotham comes in with a similar skillset. They are a strong team in transition, press effectively (they've forced the second-most high turnovers), and like to have the ball. Gotham now leads the league in average possession per game, at 58.3%, while the Reign are in the top half, averaging 52.9% possession.

According to Harvey, the spot on the field where this game will be won is in the middle third. "The games tend to shift in momentum on who's dominating in the middle part of the field. We know their strengths, we know where they can hurt you, but I've always believed against Gotham that if you can dominate in the middle third, it tends to be what can dictate the game."

Who to watch

Jaedyn Shaw

The 2024 NWSL Rookie of the Year has picked up where she left off, leading Gotham's attack with three goals. Acquired from North Carolina Courage for a record intraleague transfer fee, Shaw is a quick, direct forward who can also play attacking midfielder. She is most dangerous when she's making sharp runs in behind the defensive line. In the match against Boston, she opened the scoring early in the second half and has now recorded a goal or assist in three straight matches. The Reign's centerbacks will need to communicate well and track her runs carefully.

Emily Sonnett

Emily Sonnett is one of Gotham's most important players on the field, and arguably one of the most underrated in the league. The 2025 NWSL Best XI Second Team selection started every single regular-season match last year. What makes her so difficult to deal with is her versatility and her tenacity. It's really difficult to beat Sonnett in a ground or aerial duel. She is currently first in the NWSL in successful passes and has won 67% of her aerial duels this year. The Reign's forwards will need to find ways to get around her rather than through her.

Jaelin Howell

The Reign sent Jaelin Howell to Gotham as part of the deal that brought Lynn Biyendolo and Cassie Miller to Seattle, and she's been excellent for them this season, anchoring their midfield and providing the defensive work rate to free up Rose Lavelle and Savannah McCaskill in front of her. Howell has started all nine games and recorded six interceptions against Boston.
